absolutely, thanks. And I hope you had a nice Valentine's Day. We are in Budapest right now, tomorrow we are leaving for home, probably arriving on Saturday, as it's a bit too far to do in one go.
Sonia
Budapest is beautiful indeed, it's the second time I am here and both times in winter I guess in summer it might be too crowded for my taste.
Sonia
What a wonderful trip, Sonia! Enjoy and safe travels home again!

Kitty, you may want me to re-record the Madam d’Agoult pronunciation. I checked 3 different possible pronunciations of this name online, but each one was vastly different. I hope I guessed the correct one?
Meanwhile, the rascal Damrosch keeps us in suspense regarding his love life! So much for a tell-all memoire!
Thanks,
Val

The section on women was rather interesting. Indeed, the orchestras back then only consisted of men, I imagine, so there must have been some sort of musical education for boys When did they start to accept women in their orchestras I wonder ?
Section 24 is straight PL ok.
Just one small edit for Section 16:
> at 0:21: you forgot to say "Part 1" after the title (since this chapter is split in two)
thanks
Sonia
I agree, the name was probably originally with umlaut.bergmannw wrote: ↑February 11th, 2024, 6:23 pmSection 5 is ready for PL. https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/mymusicallife_05_damrosch_128kb.mp3 30:40
According to the sources I've checked, the clarinetist mentioned on page 72, Muhlfeld, is spelled with an umlaut on the "u." So I pronounced it that way, even though Damrosch (or his editor or his proofreader) left the umlaut off.
This chapter taught me to extremely like Liszt and dislike Wagner I think Damrosch secretely also felt that way, the way he portrayed them both.
Wonderfully narrated, I enjoyed it a lot. Only a few small notes for your consideration:
> at 0:25: actually for the title proper you could use "chapter 5" instead of "section" at this point here
> from 26:44 to 26:47: between "in this book" and "it was not" – the pause of over 3 seconds feels a bit too long, I would cut to under 2 at least
> from 28:03 to 28:05: between "into the beyond" and "the following winter" – also here I would cut a bit more silence, so as not to exceed 2 seconds
> at 30:10: "altogether, I cannot understand why" – you say "although"
> from 30:30 to 30:33: between "of this oratorio" and "end of section 5" – cutting the lengthy silence here as well
thanks
Sonia

the pronunciations are quite ok, except you say "Jean" the English way instead of French "Jeanne", but since they are in America, and it's the same name, I guess this is perfectly ok. No need to redo anything. Section 14 is PL ok.
Thanks !!
Sonia
Welcome back, I hope you had a wonderful vacation! Thank you, I did forget to say Part I in this case which I have never done in my solo recordings. I have corrected it and here is the link.

Yes, the chapter on women was very interesting and it wasn't until the early part of the twentieth century that the first women joined symphony orchestras although there were apparently all women orchestras before that. There are still some major orchestras who have very few women. Both men and women had private education in music in earlier years which would have prepared men for musical careers but women generally played in the home and for social occasions. One big exception was Clara Schumann.

Just one small re-arrangement for section 17:
> at 21:53: "Mme Nordica, Mr Stephen S. Palmer, Mrs Trenor L. Park, Mr Amos Pinchot" –Could you place these 4 names at the right spot please, so the list stays in alphabetical order ?
> the background noise is a bit too prominent in this section, could you please run a round of noise cleaning over it, taking a sample from them last 5 seconds of room silence, where it's very audible ?
Sonia
Thank you, I see what I did in terms of the alphabetical arrangement of names. I had printed out the text and two short columns were at the bottom of one page and the longer columns on the next and I just read from the shorter columns without thinking of the alphabetical listing. It has now been corrected. I was a bit puzzled about the background noise because I didn't really hear it and I always run the noise reduction before submitting the section but I just ran it again and I hope that it is better. Thanks.
