John Inglesant, a Romance, by Joseph Henry Shorthouse (1834 - 1903)
‘John Inglesant’ is the best known of Mr. Shorthouse’s novels: it is also the most perfect embodiment of this spirit of mysticism in fiction. The hero, whose name gives the title to the book, is a cavalier in the court of King Charles the First. There is an exquisite aroma about his character: he is a gentleman and a saint, a courtier with the soul of an anchorite. He adheres with scrupulous fidelity to the requirements of his order, yet he is haunted with visions of the Divine life: he is a mystic and a man of the world.

The book is a romance of the time of Charles I., and the years immediately following his death, and is cast in the form of the memoirs of John Inglesant, the working-out of whose character forms the most interesting part of a hook, every line of which has its interest. In John Inglesant - educated and trained from his early years at the hands of the Jesuits, and moulded and tuned from the first for the purposes they had in view — the author cleverly paints the conflict of a naturally frank and truthful character, with the more artificial virtues of unquestioning obedience and blind adherence to a cause, however bad, once taken in hand, that the skilful training by these most successful of teachers had superinduced. The book may be said to be divided into two parts, each of which covers a volume [chapters 1-20, 21-39]. In the first, the scene is laid in England, during the last days of the struggle between Charles I. and his Parliament. The second deals with later events in Italy, that took place about the time of the election of Pope Alexander VII; while, interwoven with the later story, is an account of the Molinists and Quietists in Italy, whose short-lived fervour was crushed by the Jesuits, through the arrest of their leader, Michael de Molinos. Throughout the whole, however, runs the thread of John Inglesant’s personal history, which is very cleverly conceived and skilfully blended in.

[The book] expresses ideals that to the majority of us have become mere phrases. Briefly these ideals are, setting aside the question of religion, personal fidelity to a personal sovereign and single-hearted reverence for one woman.

This novel was loved by J.R.R. Tolkien. ok MW is ready to be filled in.

One question though, I see your word count. I think you need not divide the chapters as they will fit in nicely in our maximum 74 minutes rule. But if you wanted to have shorter chapters, then of course you can divide them.

I also changed the wording to "Section" instead of "Chapter" in the intro/outro, because definitely, when you divide the chapters, "section" is the way to go to avoid any confusion. "Chapter x part x" is getting too muddy in the long run.

For example: say "Section 5" in the first part of the intro and then "Chapter 3 Part 1" in the second part where you state the section title. And in the end "End of Section 5"
That way the intial section numbers match the MW numbers perfectly.

Another question about the text sources...we usually only use one source as all the readers need to read from the same source, so do you prefer gutenberg or archive ?

You're in as DPL as requested and as soon as the MW is filled in we can move to readers wanted.

Thankyou! MW filled in.

I divided the chapters because 3 of them would exceed 74 minutes and also because 3500 seems to be the sweet spot in getting readers in my experience.

Happy to use section, rather than chapter.

I chose the archive.org source because it has the whole book in one volume rather than the Gutenberg 2 volumes. But sometimes scans have unexpected errors so I thought I'd link to Gutenberg in case someone has a problem on a page and needs an alternative.

Thanks for MCing! My first fiction BC.

I personally also like shorter sections myself, so I can understand you.

I actually noticed the other way around...Gutenberg often has errors because of the OCR scannos that have not been caught, while I prefer checking the original scan on archive to have the correct PD text.

It's ok if you give another text source, but please only check from one source as DPL yourself, so we don't have different versions in the end.
My first fiction BC.
it is ? interesting. But definitely not your first BC project. And the gist is the same for fiction or non-fiction.

Ok moving to readers wanted then...

Section 3 PL Notes:
I enjoyed this section.
 • 00:00 Note (no change needed): The volume of this track is 91.32dB. LV requires the overall volume for the track (measured by ReplayGain - you can try this tool if you want to check the volume) to be between 86-92dB (with 89dB being the ideal). The file falls within the outer ends of that range and so doesn't need to be changed but watch that it doesn't end up outside the range. The easiest way to automatically set the volume is to use the 'Loudness Normalization' effect (set to -19LUFS in 'perceived loudness' mode) in recent versions of Audacity before exporting the track as an MP3. If you use RMS normalization, set it to -21dB. Another way would be to use the Amplify effect set to -2dB.
 • 00:20 Section title should be "Chapter 2 Part 1", not "Section 3 Chapter 2 Part 1"
 • 07:59 'Antidotes' for Anecdotes (His grandfather's dimly remembered anecdotes)

Hi there! Thank you so much for the feedback. I'll definitely look into the Loudness Normalization for my next recordings. I have updated both files and re-uploaded to the drive. Timing changed slightly for both. I did my best to match my previous pitch for anecdotes, but it may still stand out. If there are any tips you recommend, I'm happy to redo as needed. Thanks again!
