Christmas Short Works Collection 2022

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/christmas-short-works-collection-2022-by-various/
Christmas 2022 is coming, so get your thinking caps on and join in this year's collection. If you have any doubts about the PD status or the relevance to this collection, just post and ask. All languages welcome.
Special conditions
**In order that all may contribute, 2 contributions only per reader please ***

Deadline: This will be catalogued on 20th of December so that it can be enjoyed from then. All files will need to be PL OK by then to be included, so please check your uploaded files before then.
  1. Find a Christmas-themed selection (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, whatever) in any language.
  2. Ensure that your text is clearly in the public domain. Gutenberg is a good source. Another possibility is an Archive scan which includes clear copyright information. The publication date must be 1926 or earlier. If you are unsure about the copyright status of your selection, you may want to ask for help to verify that it is public domain before you record.
  3. If you are not in the US, please ensure that you know and abide by the copyright laws in your own country as well as US law (above). Again, if you are unsure, ask.
  4. Your submission can be as long or short as you need, as long as it is under 70 minutes or so.
  5. If you'd like to see what has already been included in a previous Christmas Collection, they can all be found here: https://librivox.org/group/637 However, if your selection has been done before, you are still welcome to submit your own recording. I do ask that no duplicates be included in the same collection.
  6. Extra sections will be added to the MW as they become necessary.
  7. Please feel free to submit suggestions of works that would be a good fit for this collection, if you know of any.
Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'll start you off with Christmas Eve at Mr. Wardle's from Pickwick Papers, by Charles Dickens.

I've taken it from the excellent collection in https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Our_American_Holidays_-_Christmas. Although the collection is dated 1949, it wasn't renewed and the original copyright on the collection is 1907. Thus everything is in the Public Domain.

Hmm. I need more than just your word on the copyright. Do you have a source for this information? (Our general text policy is anything less than 95 years ago must come from a reputable source - HathiTrust or Gutenberg.)

I see "Our American Holidays" on HathiTrust, volume 12 is here: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=msu.31293101893810 but it's not viewable for me, probably because I'm outside the US. Is this volume the Christmas one?

OK, I've compared the text to the Gutenberg version in The Pickwick Papers, and it's got a couple word substitutions, but not enough to notice on a standard PL. So I'll use that text source and accept the recording. :)

English Wikisource is a reputable source. We take copyright very seriously there and are very careful to check the status of the works that are uploaded. This book was proofread from the scans for Christmas 2010. If it hadn't been scan-backed I wouldn't have recommended it here as a source.

I can't help on HathiTrust as I'm also outside US and I only use it complete lacunae in scanned texts.

May I claim "Christmas Day" from Washington Irving's "Old Christmas."

Thanks for the offer, but I plan on PL'ing the sections. :) (You'll notice I'm in as DPL, at the top of the list in the Magic Window.)

Huh...weird. Never left that off before. I guess there's a first time for everything. Should be fixed now.
