Autobiography of a private in the 1st Tennessee Company B during the American Civil War.
Significant historical value. I am a Civil War reenactor in a unit that represents the 1st Tennessee Company B.
Not found in http://www.gutenberg.org/, but I found a link to it in Google Books:

Published 1905.
I am considering making this a solo project, but due to being new to LibriVox, I thought it best to start with this suggestion.

I can't access the one on Google Books, but I found it at Archive: http://www.archive.org/details/privationsofpriv00tone
This one (1907) has 13 chapters; I see another version on Archive (1905) with only 12.
13 chapters and about 37000 words, which would work out to about 4.5 hours of finished recording. That's a small to mid-sized project, I'd say. It's definitely doable as a first solo.
The wiki, linked at the top of each forum page, has a lot of information. Specifically, the Newbie Guide to Recording is a good place to start.
We do STRONGLY encourage a one-minute test (LINK) to check your technical settings. It's not an audition, but to make sure you're exporting at the correct bit rate, have your recording in mono, etc.
We do suggest that, before digging into a solo, you read a couple sections in a group project first (see the Readers Wanted sections of the forums). That way you can get a feel for how things work here - the file naming and ID tag structure, how the Magic Window is managed (as a soloist, you're in charge of updating your own magic window), how things are proof-listened and approved, etc. Being a soloist can be a lonely process.
Holler if you have further questions. Have fun!

The 1907 edition (2nd edition) looks to be a better choice, since it has an added chapter ("13. Retrospective"). So, I'll go with the official link as http://www.archive.org/details/privationsofpriv00tone as you suggested.
I do plan on doing the 1-minute test as soon as I can get my small studio together for that. I don't expect any issues--I have experience doing recordings, though it's been awhile.
