I have a question about the play Saint Joan by G.B.Shaw. It is not on Gutenberg but is on Australian Gutenberg http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/0200811h.html. It was published in 1924 so it 'should' be ok to record but I've learned caution in my old age and just want to know if there is a reason why it would not be acceptable for us. I plan to do it solo if it is OK because I think it is his best play. Thanks.

The Australian Gutenberg can be problematic; https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/001373875 is a HathiTrust scan. It should be out of copyright around the world, as George Bernard Shaw died in 1950.

This source will work. The copyright of 1924 is clearly printed in Roman numerals.

Hi all,
What about the 19th century The Way of the Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues on His Way? Copyright extended and thus not in the public domain?

Works published in 1925 or earlier are automatically public domain in the USA, even if the copyright was extended in the 1940s and 1950s. Just be sure to find an edition of the text that is back then; one published in, say 1960, may have been edited and therefore gets a new copyright. :)

I am wondering why Chymocles has not done any more of the Barsoom books... I cannot seem to message anyone so have not been able to ask him.

Hi there and welcome to LV!

I had to look up what you mean  and it seems that the books we don't have in our catalog yet are still copyrighted. Wikipedia has a list on here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barsoom
and according to US copyright, which extends until 95 years after publication (*), the next one in the series will become public domain and thus recordable for LibriVox in 2 years.

Hope this helps, and hopefully, Tom will be around in 2023 to read the next book on the list! :D

(*) There are exceptions to this rule, but they are far and in between and relatively difficult to establish for sure.

It's because you have not posted much. It's a security feature, to prevent someone from creating a fake account and spamming folks. You will get that ability after a bit more activity in the forum. :)

I assume this book is not LibriVox recordable because it's a new translation - but it is available through Gutenberg via some sort of special arrangement:

"Bambi" by Felix Salten translated by David Wyllie
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/63849

If an admin thinks this can be a LibriVox book I'd love to hear about it.

Not all books at PG are PD. if you scroll down on that page, you'll see this:
Copyright Status Copyrighted. Read the copyright notice inside this book for details.
So no, not do-able here. :)

It looks as if a translation will become available to us in a few years: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=83995

... though I've not made a search, myself.

HathiTrust says 1929, and hopefully that copy will be available in 2025, when it goes PD.

Annie Besant died in 1933. That means I cannot record her books, even though I live in Canada?

Rudolph Steiner - for some reason IA doesn't seem to have his books in PD translations?
