The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy, by Theodore Lothrop Stoddard (1883 - 1950)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found in our catalog:
https://librivox.org/the-rising-tide-of-color-against-white-world-supremacy-by-theodore-lothrop-stoddard/

Lothrop Stoddard's most famous treatise on race. Written in the aftermath of the First World War, Stoddard examines the racial trends of his time and makes predictions about the future. His main thesis is that worldwide white supremacy should not be taken for granted, and that other races will challenge it in the coming years. (Summary by Readerad)

Target completion date: 2024-04-15

Prooflistening level: Special
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello Readerad, I'll be your MC for this project. Back in a bit with your Magic Window.

Update:
Magic Window is in place!

As the solo reader, you will be the Book Coordinator (BC) for this book. Since this is your first time as BC, we've got to get you set up on the back-end system. Your username there will be the same as your forum username, but it is separate, and can have a different password if you wish.

Step-by-step instructions for the first time signing in to the back-end:
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Soloists:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window#Accessing_the_System_%E2%80%93_First_Time_Login
Once the account is set up, you can update the Magic Window for this project by clicking the 'BC Admin' link just below it. I've filled in the first few chapter titles as an example, but I'll have you fill in the rest as soon as you're signed in.

As you read and upload each chapter, we'll have you enter its link, its duration, and update its status from this screen (full instructions are on the same page I linked), and then of course post in thread to let your Proof Listener know that there's a chapter waiting. I'm assuming you don't have someone lined up to be Dedicated Proof Listener, so I've added a tilde (~) to the beginning of the thread title.

I'll have you fill in those chapter titles at your earliest convenience, we'll stay on the launch pad for a couple of days to see if someone is interested in Proof Listening, and then we'll move off to the Going Solo forum.
I'll be out for a bit on this last weekend of April, but still checking in as I get the chance. I will try to follow up on Monday, with anything I can't do on the go.

Adding that tilde may not have stuck the first time, so I did it again on the 24th. :hmm:

But as we've been on the launch pad for several days, I'll move us off to Going Solo. If we don't have a DPL by the time your first chapter is up, you can follow the instructions here to advertise on the Proof Listeners & Editors Wanted forum.

Alright! This is the point in the process where the Book Coordinator enters that link and duration in to the Magic Window, and updates the status for that section to "Ready for PL". You've been in group projects before that had someone else as BC, but this time around, it's you. :D

Full instructions are here:

Hello RoundTableKnight! I've added you to our system as the "Dedicated Proof Listener" (DPL) for this project. That "Dedicated" means you're going to watch this thread (I recommend hitting the wrench icon, and hitting 'Subscribe', so you'll get email notifications) and proof-listen each new chapter as it's uploaded. If that isn't what you intended, just let me know.

You now have an account in the back-end system. Your username is the same as your forum username, but it will need a new password. You can find the instructions for setup here:
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=DPLs:_How_to_Update_the_Magic_Window#Accessing_the_System_%E2%80%93_First_Time_Login

You can find all of the relevant information in the first post of this thread: what ought to be said at the beginning and end of each chapter, and how much silence there should be as well. Instructions on the types of errors you're listening for are linked from there (marked "Guide for Proof Listeners"), and you'll find this "Checker" tool very handy in checking the technical specs.

When you've finished Proof Listening a chapter, you'll post any notes in the thread, then sign into the back-end system and change the Status to either "PL OK" or "See PL Notes". Instructions on accessing that system are further down this first page I linked.

I know that's a lot to remember. Take your time, enjoy, and ask questions if you have them!
As this is your first time proof-listening, I'll also do some spot-checks. I'll let you know if I find anything, and you'll know what to check for next time.

Hello, thank you for the guide.
1. In order to see the timecode, you will need to download the file and open it in a media player. When you simply click on a file, it will often open in QuickTime in the browser window (on some computers), but that window will not show time code.

By time code, do you just mean the clock or is it more specific? Opening in my browser gives me that. So no need to download right?

2. "Checker" tool very handy in checking the technical specs.

Am I responsible for checking the technical specs?

Notes for Preface
4:50 Pronunciation - As far as I know, 'messrs.' should be pronounced 'messers' rather than 'misters.'

I use the suggested checker software to check the technical specs before uploading, so no need to do that. I'll fix the "messrs." thing in the next day or two, thanks.

1. For the time code, yes, most players will show you where in the file you are. I'm not sure how old that particular clause in the instructions is.

2. Yes, checking the tech specs is part of Proof Listening - no matter how smart and attentive a reader is, they'll eventually get a detail wrong eithout noticing, so we are set up to have two sets of eyes on these things.

I will also note that "misters" rather than "messers" isn't something we require fixing with our Standard level of Proof Listening - refer to that Guide for Proof Listeners link for more specifics.
Some readers do prefer to have this kind of thing mentioned, it's just not a requirement. :)

The reader said he is managing the technical aspects.
Yes, I realized that I'm doing only a 'standard' listening so I don't have to follow along but for the preface I did anyway and noticed that small error.
