[COMPLETE]What I Saw in America by G. K. Chesterton.

This book was cataloged on June 8, 2009. The audio files have been transferred to Internet Archive, and are available at: http://librivox.org/what-i-saw-in-america-by-chesterton/
“Let me begin my American impressions with two impressions I had before I went to America. One was an incident and the other an idea; and when taken together they illustrate the attitude I mean. The first principle is that nobody should be ashamed of thinking a thing funny because it is foreign; the second is that he should be ashamed of thinking it wrong because it is funny.” (Gilbert Keith Chesterton)

I really laughed at his description of American hotels. I used to travel in connection with my work. He's still right: you must look at the numbers in the elevator to make sure you have the right floor.

In England and on the continent, many of the smaller, less expensive hotels, like the ones I stayed in and payed for myself, don't seem to be built for the purpose of being hotels, and each room is different. I found it quite delightful.

I seem to recall the Holiday Inns used to advertise that "you always know what to expect" in a Holiday Inn. He He.

And the bathtub part is hilarious!

Hello,

Just want to jump in for a second to thank you Ray, (and kmerline) for all your hard work with the Chesterton books you have been doing lately.

I have listened to several of the books you have read, and your reading is quite easy and enjoyable to listen to.

Just wanted to let you know that someone is listening - and thank you!

Karen and Maria,

I also used to travel, but only North America, and my experience of hotels was much the same. A helpful travel agent once put me on the track of what are termed "European Boutique Hotels", which I can only presume are more like those in Europe. From then on, I found one to my likeing in every major city I visited. A distinct improvement.

Maria! We are delighted to hear from anyone out there. Both Karen and I are great fans of Chesterton, and this has become a labor of love. But in the end of little other value if no one listens. Thank you for the encouragement. There are only a very few Chesterton books left in the Public Domain, so the project will end this summer. I am delighted to hear from you anytime.

Our next series will be to pick up again with Belloc who, while not so humorous as Chesterton, is equally insightful and very pointed in his writing.

Have a great day!

Ray
