The Creature from Beyond Infinity, by Henry Kuttner.

THIS BOOK IS NOW COMPLETE. All audio files may be found on the catalog page:
http://librivox.org/the-creature-from-beyond-infinity/
A lone space traveler arrives on Earth seeking a new planet to colonize, his own world dead. At the same time a mysterious plague has infected Earth that will wipe out all life. Can a lone scientist stop the plague and save the world? Or will the alien find himself on another doomed planet? (Summary by Mark Nelson)
  • Target completion date: 1/1/09
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://manybooks.net/titles/kuttnerhother07creature_from_beyond_infinity.html
  • Type of proof-listening required: Standard.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project will be opened up to a group project as soon as a Book Coordinator can be found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to have it re-instated).

    ===========================================

    • Say:
"Title, by Author. [Translated by [translator]]. [Chapter]"

      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:

Hey, Mark, I hope you have better scans on this one than you did with Manybooks' version of Piper's Cosmic Computer. Give me a bit to get your window set up, and we'll be ready to roll.

EDIT: OK, Window is set up and you are all set!

Thanks Paul.

Actually the scans are a bit dicey. Lot's of obvious typo's, but hey - I live on the edge.

I PLed Section 1 and it's OK to catalog. I'm about to download and PL section 2.

If I'm needed I can PL more sections in a couple of days. The story is intriguing.

Cheers,
Betty

Section 2 is OK.

I like the final sentence of that section. :)

I'll keep my eye on this thread to see if someone else volunteers to PL

This is what I found for Section 3: Tech specs of file ok; seconds of silence at end of file ok; intro, disclaimer, closing words ok.

There are some stumbles/repeats that I have noted with the approximate times:

Chapter 7

At 02:21 reader says: how can we travel? Text says: how can he travel?

03:34 reader says: if it's a ship. Text says: if it is a ship.

04:54 > reader: with the modern rocket fuels. Text: with modern rocket fuels.

At 09:42 there is a repetition, reader says: No, Yes, No, Yes. Text just says: No, Yes.

13:20 > reader: it was dead, as he expected. Text: as he had expected.

19:14 > reader: I know what that's like. Text: I know what it's like.

Chapter 8 (groan)

At 21:32 > reader: there is something new. Text: there is nothing new.

22:04 > reader: which he had seen only on...Text: which he had only seen on...

22:16 > reader: Truly the road of ages was... Text: Truly the road of the ages was...

27:25 > reader: the ambar cat-eyes. Text: the ambar cat's eyes.

28:40 > reader: To the South. Text: In the South.

29:03 > reader: shook the chill winds. Text: shook in the chill winds.

30:16 > reader: by the fires. Text: by their fires.

30:32 > reader: a few lamps of pottery. Text: a few small lamps of pottery.

Chapter 9 is spot on.

Other than that the reading is wonderful, especially some of the accents which are really great!

Marian M.

EDIT: Could it be that in some cases these are not stumbles but typos?

Well THAT was one sloppy read. In my own pathetic defense, the book was recorded in three days right before Xmas. Fatigue obviously affects accuracy. Once I get all the comments I'll make all the fixes.

PLing notes for Section 4:

Chapter 10

01:49: reader > she had lost all silly feminine habits. Text > all the silly feminine habits.
10:23: reader > Court had made a great effort. Text > Court made a great effort.
17:30: reader > to save the experiment from those ignorant fools. Text > from these ignorant fools.
18:52: reader > that his lambent light. Text > that its lambent light.
20:52: reader > it's, it's a horror. Text > It - it's a horror.

Chapter 11

31:15: reader > It caught the behemoth in mid-stride, bathing it in shining radiance. Text: bathed it in shining radiance.
33:43: reader > I might have better called you comrade. Text > I might better have called...
34:50: reader > staring with a burning fixity on the Atlantean priestess. Text: ...at the Atlantean priestess.
36:36: reader > Thordred's cat-eyes glittered. Text: Thordred's cat's-eyes glittered.
38:11: reader > We shall automatically fall into orbit. Text > ...fall into our orbit.

Chapter 12

43: 52: reader > the rivers are filling with floating corpses. Text > the rivers are filled with...
54:42: reader > his unbronzed body (??). Text > his bronzed body.
1:00:20 reader > they are not difficult to understand. Text > they were not difficult to understand.

Other than these little slips, it's a great reading.
Regards.

I uploaded a new section 3 with the edits above. The rest of section 3 and all of section 4 look minor and don't affect the meaning, so I'm leaving them as-is.
