The Young Colonists: A Story of the Zulu and Boer Wars, by G. A. Henty (1832 - 1902)
In this book, Henty explores the wars of the British empire in Africa. His sympathies may be entirely with the English (as is our young protagonist), but his eye for historical detail and his ability to weave a personal plot into the real events of history make this an educational and still engaging read.

Or, in the author's own words:
After having written upwards of fifty records of almost unbroken success to the British arms in almost all parts of the world, I have found it painful to describe these two campaigns in which we suffered defeat. I trust, however, that this story will prove of great interest to the reader because of the characteristic English pluck and daring of its hero. (Summary by redrun)

I guess I'll start with Chapter 20.

Thanks!

Welcome aboard! Chapters 1 and 2 are yours, but please do let me know if you might not get to them both. These chapters aren't long for Henty, but his sentences have a way of riding off into the sunset, if you could unexpectedly change directions while you did it. <- Like this one, but perhaps less whimsical.

Since we're off to a good start, we'll move on to Readers Wanted: Books!

I’d like to return section 8 to the “open” list. As something of a nature-lover, the text is uncomfortable for me …

Ok, I'll remove your claim for chapter 11, with the elephant hunt. If you meant a claim in a different project, just let me know!

Thank you, I've got you in for chapter 4! I'm happy to get to hear this one, as I've never read it before! (Most of my existing favorites are already available for a re-listen.)
