a perfect run-through, thank you so much ! Only one small thing, could you run one round of noise-cleaning over it all please ? Then the sound will be a bit better.

Thanks

Here is the update with a second noise reduction. I am mystified by this background noise issue because I don't hear it and it only seems to be an issue sometimes. I actually think this second reduction makes it sound a bit more muffled in comparison with section 13 which had only one noise reduction. Well, I hope this sounds better! We know from previous experience that a third reduction would be a disaster!

Hello Sonia,
Here is the recording in two parts, the first adjusted, the second no mistakes but did not use "effects."
Hope this goes through properly.

thank you, I had a look at your file and I think I know now where you went wrong.

If you open the file you just sent me in audacity, you can clearly see (if you see the whole audio-wave in one screen) that the last part, the part that was missing and you recorded in a new session, is much louder than the first part that you recorded previously and already had amplified and noise cleaned.

The good news is: your microphone seems to record well, the "untreated" sound is not distorted. Though I would recommend maybe not recording that loud in the first place. Either speak softer while recording, or further away from the microphone, or what's even best, if feasible, reduce the input volume on your microphone (do you have a toggle that enables input volume ?).

Now you probably tried to equalize the sound and noise clean this entire file and since the beginning is so much softer than the rest, it distorted the "loud" parts, desperately trying to get them to a same level. Bottom line: if you re-record bit, either correcting PL notes or recording part of the chapter in a separate session: always treat, clean and amplify those parts separately from the main file, which normally has been treated, cleaned any amplified before. Then paste this new recording, (cleaned and amplified) into the right slot in your masterfile. The masterfile should only be treated ONCE otherwise the sound will get overprocessed.

So I reuploaded your section now and if you have a listen (download from the Magic Window the latest version), you will notice no more discrepancy in sound from the old part where it moves seamlessly into the new part.

Here's what I did:

1. I copied the new recording, the one that was untreated and way too loud, into a new window to treat it

2. I found a sample of background noise and ran noise-cleaning once, that was enough to get the hum out. To get a good sample it's important to let the room silence run on for a few seconds at the end. Your file stopped too abruptly, it was nearly impossible to get a good sample. Always let it run a bit on after you stop speaking.

3. I checked the volume, it was too loud, I had to decrease by -7 to get to a good average of 89 dB

4. now this cleaned and de-amplified file, I copied once again and pasted it back into the masterfile, where I deleted your too loud version

5. I re-exported it all and now the file is clean and every part in the same volume

But the "end of section 4" was missing in the version you gave me and in the last version it was in a distorted sound as well. Could you please add that bit to the end still and also 5 seconds of silence. That is all that is still needed.

So it gives you a possibility to practice editing. I would suggest you follow the steps above with this one sentence.

> record "end of section 4" in a new audacity window
> noise clean and amplify (or decrease probably) it so it sounds good
> copy it and paste it at the end of your masterfile (the latest version you downloaded from the MW, use that one, it's the one I cleaned now)
> re-export, upload and post here

To be on the safe side I will relisten to it all from scratch once again I get your new file. :)

We're getting there ! I was glad your microphone was good quality, it's way easier to correct the overprocessing method than a faulty microphone. So we are in luck.

Hello Sonia,
Hope I have done this correctly. You've devoted so much time to me for which I am grateful. I still find editing rather confusing. I think I have to read the manual again.
Warm regards,

thank you, Janet, this is definitely now PL ok, I listened to the whole thing again just to make sure the final version is the correct one.

And don't worry about editing. The more often you do it, the easier it will become. :)

And we are nearly finished, only one last section to wait for. 8-)

wonderful narration, Leslie, thank you very much  the description of Christmas was giving me nostalgia :9: and the doll's house Wagner performance must have been something special to watch  wow

Absolutely perfect and PL ok. That means the project is ready for the catalogue.

A huge thank you to all the readers who contributed to this project, it was a joy to listen to all of you :)

I'm the guy who first proposed doing this book, then had to step away from it. Glad I was able to contribute a couple of chapters. Thank you everyone, for picking up the ball and running with it. Pop the corks!
