History in English Words seeks to retell the history of Western civilisation by exploring the change in meanings of various words.
According to Barfield, “language has preserved for us the inner, living history of man’s soul.” With attention to myth, science, and religion, Barfield traces the history of language from Aryan, Roman, and Greek culture to Western medieval and modern times, using various words as examples to illustrate the evolution of human consciousness.

Language has preserved for us the inner, living history of man’s soul. It reveals the evolution of consciousness.

Wow, this looks fascinating. I haven't yet managed any Barfield, but he's definitely on my list. I will bookmark this and may come back to it.
