This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/l-anno-3000-by-paolo-mantegazza/

A description of a global social contract of sorts in the next millennium. Note for the MC who will kindly set this up for me: I’m not sure yet about the sections. At least two, possibly four. If it is easier to delete than to add later, please create four; if the other way round, maybe two?

Edit:

The source suggested by Sue seems easier to read than the one I had earlier linked. I have now edited the first post, replacing the linked book to use.

Edit 2:

I guess 13 sections for 13 chapters will be easier. Please disregard my initial thoughts.

Hi DrSpoke,

This looks like a fascinating project. The first English translation, published by the Univ. of Nebraska Press in 2010, received lavish praise: "belongs among the visionary giants of speculative literature..." https://archive.org/details/year3000dream00mant/page/n227/mode/2up

There is a copy of the original Italian edition on archive.org: https://archive.org/details/lanno300000mant/page/323/mode/1up

For a book containing 324 pages, you're going to need more than 4 sections. A suggestion might be to start with sections equal to the number of chapters in the novel (13 chapters). Even then, you may want to subdivide the chapters, depending on how long you want each recorded section to be.

Persons acting as BCs can add sections. Only a MC can delete sections.

Hello Sue! Thank you for you input.

About the number of pages, at least in the version I've checked so far, they are definitely less beefy than what we are used to. So, the project is not that long.

I'm not fond of very short sections, because the intro/outro that comes with them, albeit shorter from the second onwards, interferes with the flow. That's why I'm trying to figure out if it could fit in maybe four sections with a variable number of chapters each.

Claudia, I'll be glad to set this up for you. The MW is up. It looks like 13 sections was your latest estimate.

Yes, correct. Apologies for the confusion in my first post.

Many thanks Michael for helping me with the MCoordination, and adding the tilde for a DPL. I'll later complete the magic window with the titles - they'll be just "Chapter 1" and so on.

Hi DrSpoke, Chapter 1 is PL OK.

I'll DPL this for you. No, I don't speak Italian, but I read Spanish and Portuguese, and in my earlier days at Librivox, I DPL'd a lot of Leni's Portuguese selections. It's a good activity to focus one's concentration... I waited to hear you read the first chapter of Mantegazza to see if I could follow along; so far so good.

If you would please give me the the URLs to your files in your posts, I can download the chapters and listen to them on Audacity, which will be easier for me.

I have a certain interest in utopian literature. Being that the English translation of The Year 3000 is available on archive.org, this will give me the motivation to read it.

Cheers,

That's awesome, Sue! Thank you.
I'll start posting the copied links like in the group projects then.
And Michael could open the MW gate for you now, i guess.

Well... on archive.org, because the English translation is still under conpyright, to read it, you "borrow" the book for an hour at a time from the Boston Public Library. An interesting concept!

So, today, in my allotted hour, I read the first four chapters... p 87 (Ch. 3) Maria: "Do you think that one day we will be able to artificially produce thought too in protoplasm we have created..."

Good morning over there
Good morning, DrSpoke. Raining here this morning, so I had time to PL. There was only one minor slip up, which I noted, on page 34, at 11:14, it seems you left out one paragraph, which reads "--Scusi, signora; ma abbiamo molto appetito e ci basterebbe il piu modesto spuntino: due uova e un po'di pane."

One suggestion from me, which you can take or ignore, as you like.... I think you should read the Chapter Subheadings that introduce the chapters -- as, for instance in Capitolo Secondo:

Da Spezia alle antlclie Piramidi d'Egitto. — Dalle Piramidi all'Isola degli Esperimenti. — Paese dell'Eguaglianza. — Tirannopoli. — Turazia o la Repubblica socialista, — Logopoli. — Altri governi e altri organismi sociali.

I missed the fact that these subheadings existed, when I PL'd chapter No 1, because of the intervening "Digitized by the Internet Archive" page broke up the textual flow. or I would have made this suggestion last time.

Another suggestion: I think it's advantageous to give each chapter a short descriptive title in the Magic Window for cataloging. Instead of just saying "Chapter 1, Chapter 2" etc. Descriptive chapter headings capture the attention of the person who might be looking through the LibriVox catalog and give them a peek into the book, which might pique their curiosity to listen to the recording.

If you use this method for cataloguing, you do not have to write "Capitulo 1, Capitulo 2" etc., before the short title, Just use the descriptive title.

You could take these titles from among the subheadings Mantegazza provides for his chapters. For instance, instead of Chapter 2, your could use Paese dell'Eguaglianza; Tirannopoli.

The "machine learning" monotone you gave the speaker from Equality took me aback at first! It was effective at capturing the spirit of the place, however. :)

Cheers,
