And here's another short bio from Encyclopedia Britannica, this time about the man behind one of the most devasting wars in Polish history:

In our catalogue we have an English translation of the Polish classical novel "With Fire and Sword" by the Nobel Laureate, Henryk Sienkiewicz, set in this very period, if you're interested in reading some historical fiction.

Hi Piotrek81, Thanks for contributing this biography of Bogdan Chmielnicki to vol. 088! What a complex swirl of shifting alliances, war, and mayhem the 1600's were in your part of the world!Piotrek81 wrote: ↑November 6th, 2021, 11:21 am And here's another short bio from Encyclopedia Britannica, this time about the man behind one of the most devasting wars in Polish history:

I see that Wikipedia is now spelling "Chmielnicki" as "Khmelnytsky," which seems to me a little closer phonetically to the way I hear the name in your recording. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cossacks
Thanks for the reading suggestion. If you'd said Henryk Sienkiewicz "the author of Quo Vadis," I would have had instant recognition, not of Sienkiewicz, but of the 1950 movie, based on another of his novels, which is an American classic. I checked our local library's catalog, and they have "With Fire and Sword," both in English and Polish, as well as Quo Vadis the movie, so I've put book & movie on my list of titles to check out.

Hi Mark, Many thanks for adding this essay by J.K.Jerome about what he perceived as the "Russian character" and the state of Russia in 1904! The unrest that he describes seems of particular interest, given the subsequent events of 1905.chulsky wrote: ↑November 9th, 2021, 12:20 pm Hello, Sue, Jo, and other fellow volunteers!

There are only two edits needed. You missed one of your repeats between 13:06.5 and 13:11 ("Corruption appears to be so general...")
The other edit needed occurs at 20:01, where you state the name of the newspaper from which you read the article as The San Francisco Chronicle. The newspaper's name was actually the San Francisco Call, and it was an antecedent of Hearst's San Francisco Examiner: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_San_Francisco_Call Back in the days I remember, the SF Chronicle and the SF Examiner used to "duke it out" in a manner approximating the two fighting Russians you read about.
Since today we celebrate the anniversary of the armistice between the German Empire and the Entente, here's a short article from Encyclopedia Britannica explaining the concept of armistice:

This was an interesting discussion of Nietzschean thought! "Life as it thus appears to the eye of the imaginative mind, is the spectacle of the eternal play and conflict of two mutually opposing principles.... And it is just this unceasing conflict that is the essence of life itself... The drama of life is thus a perpetual movement towards a climax that never comes."
There are just a few edits needed. Most important is the bit rate. The recording failed Checker. Validation info says your bit rate was 192 kbps, instead of 128 kbps.
There is one misread, on page 34, at 10:59 Text reads "Dionysos is the power that destroys forms, that leads the definite into the infinite..." You said "into the indefinite..."
And one pronunciation [blithest] I think should be changed. This is on page 26, at 2:35. Text reads "Why did the Greeks, the blithest and best constituted race the world has ever seen..." "Blithest" is (per Google) the superlative adjective form of "blithe." As such, I would, personally, pronounce "blithest" with with a long "i". See https://translate.google.com/?sl=auto&tl=en&text=blithest&op=translate
Thanks for your second contribution to vol. 088!
Thanks for listening Sue.

Hello Joyti, Welcome to LibriVox and to the Short Nonfiction Collection! I see that you have submitted a one-minute test to the "Listener's Wanted" thread, and you have received an answer from Bernd about the issues you need to address before you actually start recording for LibriVox. In case you missed Bernd's message, I am repeating his message here:Joyti29 wrote: ↑November 12th, 2021, 6:58 pm Telegraph Companies. Mental Suffering. Damages. In Western Union Telegraph Co. v. The recording "Telegraph Companies, Mental Suffering. Damages" which you submitted to the Short Nonfiction Collection shares all of the problems Bernd pointed out to you. It is stereo, with variable bit rate, and wrong kbps, and has substantial background noise and many loud clicks. Your recording failed to pass the Checker app (see #5 in the instructions for the SNF). It will need to be brought into compliance with LibriVox technical recording specifications before it can be considered for the Short Nonfiction Collection.lorda wrote: ↑November 12th, 2021, 7:53 pm Helle Joyti,
I am sorry, but your recording does not meet the technical specifications of Librivox.
A bit rate of 128 kbps constant in mono at a volume between 86 dB and 92 dB is required - 89 dB being the ideal.
Your recording has a variable bit rate of 114 kbps, is stereo at a volume of 94.8 dB.
With the free tool Checker (https://cgjennings.ca/projects/checker/) you can check your MP3 file for these values before uploading.
You should check Background Noise under Validation->Choose Validation Methods because thats not selected by default.
If you need help, post your Audacity version and I can give you a step by step guide to solve the problems.
Any other questions - just ask, here you can find a helpful community.
Greetings,
Bernd
I did listen to your recording. The title does not conform with what you read. "Telegraph Companies, Mental Suffering. Damages" is one of 4 case summaries on page 228 of the Yale Law Journal. You read all four summaries, so I would suggest that you title your recording something like "Four Case Summaries."
There is a lot to learn when you first start recording. I think it would be wise for you to take up on the offers of help extended to you in the "Listener's Wanted" thread. Then, when your one-minute test has been approved, and you are more familiar with LibriVox procedures, we will welcome a revised recording at the Short Nonfiction Collection.
Best wishes,
Sue, Book Coordinator, Short Nonfiction Collection
