Influenza ready for PL.
As we now know, influenza is caused by a virus, but in 1907 when this was published, viruses could not be seen with the microscopes available and were therefore unknown. The bacillus discovered by Pfeiffer, (previously known as Bacillus influenzae) and pictured in the text, was mistakenly identified as the cause of influenza as it was present in the airways of some, but not all influenza patients. It is now known as Haemophilus influenzae and is known to cause a variety of infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin, ear, throat and eye infections as well as more serious bloodstream infections, meningitis and arthritis-like joint inflammations.

Diphtheria is not OK, but your reading is.
I had an aunt who nearly died from it.

H. Flu is PL OK
This was before the "Spanish Flu" epidemic, and it would be another 20 years or so before the virus theory was gaining ground, The first electron microscope wasn't until 1940 or so. Now we have genomes and the ability to identify receptors and still we are ravaged by these torpedoes! Just for the record, I get my flu shot every year.

PL OK!
For a moment there, I thought this was about another, current virus, what with forced vaccinations and skeptics.
I've got my "mark of the beast" on my arm, though faded with time.
One of the true success stories of modern public health on a global scale.
I remember seeing small groups of blind, smallpox survivors, playing music on the street corners in Korea in the early seventies.

Yes, I have one on my arm as well. This was eerily reminiscent of current times, wasn't it?
