Alternately as Juanna's father is a Merchant named Reinaldos, a place name in Portugal, it could be implied that she is Jewish. Portugal at that time had a large Jewish population and the Merchant class was dominated by them.
That could also explain the hint about "mixed blood"

That's a possibility I hadn't considered... Good point!alanmapstone wrote: ↑March 26th, 2021, 12:43 pm Alternately as Juanna's father is a Merchant named Reinaldos, a place name in Portugal, it could be implied that she is Jewish. I agree that at the most it's just a possibility that's hinted at in the script. It's not a certainty that's spelled out.Kalamareader wrote: ↑March 26th, 2021, 11:12 am Kelly,
I don't know if this is the place to continue this discussion (I considered doing it via PM) but as I reread the script, other than the joking and reminiscing of past 'fun' before Leon comes on the scene, the only place I could see that that might be hinted at was the first line at the top of page 8: "Ant. The ancient blood of Vega mixed with--". But as this was in 16th Century Spain, this could just as well have been a reference to "Commoner" blood. And, as you know, the relationship with the Moors (Moriscas and Mudejars) was difficult , complicated (to say the least) and varied greatly in which part of Spain one was living as well as 'exactly' when in the 16th century it takes place. Also, since "Lewes had re-written the part of Juanna in his play to better shape the melodrama to be a star vehicle for Mowatt.", it would seem to me, as an amateur in this sort of thing, that she (Juanna) wasn't a "person of color", but that is just me.

Hello Wayne,
These notes for Don Gomez, Act 1 may be too minor to need correction, so please review and fix if you'd like. Thanks.
At 3:01 "They" changed to "He" in the phrase "He turned from me to them..."
At 4:44 "knightly" changed to "kingly" in "...to keep his kingly word..."
At 6:36 add the word "on" to "No! on a courtier!"

Hi Kelly,
I marked Act 1 stage directions as PL Okay....I think at 9:36 you want to say "End of Act 1" instead of "End of Act 2??"
Thank you,
Lora

Thanks for your hard work and keen ear.
I left the one at 6:36 as is as I think the thought is still there, but I did correct the other ones.

Yes! Welcome to the cast and welcome to Librivox!
This looks like it's your first role so I'll go though the instructions --
1) Start your file with "Don Garcia, read by HenRMJ" (or however you wish to be credited)
2) Be sure to to leave 3-5 seconds of silence between all your lines.
3) Do not read the stage directions. Another performer will be doing that.
4) If there are stage directions in the middle of your line -- such as "aside" leave 3-5 seconds of silence. [This helps the editor give the space to insert the stage directions]
5) if there are pointers in the text qualifying your voice, like [laughs] or [whines], feel free to you act those out in your reading, if possible, .
6) Save your file as nobleheart_garcia_1.mp3.

I had a brain burp.
I posted that I had corrected the errors in Gomez, Chapter 1, but forgot to post the link, so I reuploaded it, and here it is:
