Hi Daniel, Thanks for this life of Maimonides! :) I've added your recording to the Magic Window. When I ran your file through the Checker Program, Checker said that your volume falls outside the norms for LibriVox recordings. Could you please check your volume. If you are having problems, you could post a sample from your file on the "Listeners and Editors Wanted" thread and ask for one of the techies to help you out. You're going to be doing a lot of recording with the Guide for the Perplexed, so it would be a good idea to have volume issues under control beforehand.

Hi Sue! I posted this to the Listeners Wanted thread: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=80170&p=1720701#p1720701 I'm not sure where the error is. Hopefully, someone can help me out with this. I don't want to mess something up by applying the wrong adjustment in Audacity.

On a separate note, I think I'm going to hold off on the 2-part Maimonides piece ("Summary of the Guide...") for another time. I don't want to get Maimonides burnout. :D

Sue -

I figured out what the problem is and was so embarrassed that I deleted my post in the reader's forum asking for technical assistance. Sometimes I feel like the Platonic form of ineptitude. I reuploaded the same essay with the corrected version, which I first ran through Checker. It's the same name as the other one, so I wouldn't want it to get confused.

Oh my... just emerge from the Platonic cave and laugh along with some of our collective recording mishaps : viewtopic.php?f=25&t=28787&p=1707263&hilit=bloopers#p1707263 (the "blooper" thread).

Your file passed Checker this time! :)

P.S. As long as an uploaded corrected file has exactly the same name as its predecessor, it replaces the one in the Magic Window automatically. (The original is renumbered in the server.)

Hi Dale, Thanks for this! :) I agree with you about the relevancy of Twain's analysis; there is sometimes a difference between perceived and statistical danger. That said, what got me out of bed rather quickly this morning was the shrill beep from an outdated battery in one of my many, mandated by local code, ceiling mounted, fire and carbon monoxide alarms. Oh wow, I thought, which one was that as I stumbled sleepily downstairs for the step ladder, which I ascended three times before I located the beeping alarm, and noted that I'd last visited that battery on December 10, 2016. If Twain were writing today, he'd probably come up with the statistics for fatalities caused by falling off step ladders while changing alarm batteries...

Interesting calculations by Twain.

A few errors noted:

4:53 There are many short roads running out of Boston that do fully half as much; a great many such roads. Missed this whole sentence – it came after It was plain that the entire road must transport at least eleven or twelve thousand people every day.

8:08 (One can see now why I answered that ticket-agent in the manner recorded at the top of this sketch.) you forgot to read now

I think it must be a corollary of Murphy's Law that smoke detector batteries fail in the middle of the night. Our new house has 12 foot ceilings and my first thought on laying on the bed looking up at the smoke detector was 'Man, I hope those are hardwired!'
