Hi, Some_Old_Bird,
Thanks for your contribution to Vol. 64!
I've just had time to listen to a bit of your recording so far, but you have an excellent recording voice with clear articulation and a nice sense of drama. I'm sure you will find many listeners interested in your choice of subject matter.
---------------------
Your recording has a few technical issues which we need to address, particularly volume. I looked back through your posts to see if you had done the "one minute test" to get feedback on technical issues, and it looks as if your test did not upload (?). If so, I would recommend uploading it again now, or you might upload a section of this recording about the Boxer Rebellion and getting some feedback on it. There are some techies here on LibriVox who can help with technical problems.
Your volume is low. It is 77.8 db, and it needs to be about 89db. You can tell it is low by looking at the Audacity screen. On the screen, the recording should fill the space between -0.5 and +0.5. You will probably need to increase the volume by a factor of somewhere around 10.
However, before you increase your overall volume, you should smooth out any really loud spots. Myself, I just do this manually, using the "Amplify" command under "Effects." There is one really loud spot in your recording between 4:31.120-4:31.200, which is the syllable "caa" in "Catholic." If you were to decrease just the volume of this one syllable, then you could increase the volume of the whole recording more easily.
--------------------
Your file name needs a bit of correction. A file name should look like this:
snf064_titleofwork_authorlastname_yourinitials_128kb.mp3
So, your file name should look something like this: snf064_crisis_gam_sob_128kb.mp3
[Note: I'm not sure if "Gam" is the Rev. Jee Gam's last name; also, you can use the initials of your real name if you want, instead of "sob" (the initials of your forum name). The initials are just there so we can go back and identify who recorded the selection if we need to.]
--------------------
The title of your selection:
I notice that you used "boxer rebellion" in your file name. If you would like, we can tweak the name of your selection to read "The Boxer Rebellion from the Standpoint of a Christian Chinese (1900)." This would make it more searchable on the internet.
---------------------
These are all minor issues. Overall, this is a important read. While we are awaiting your technical fixes, our dedicated proof listener (DPL), Soupy, will PL your recording.
Thank you, again for your contribution.!
Regards,
Sue (Book Coordinator)
Edit: (written a couple of hours after original post): There is quite a bit of info about the Rev. Jee Gam on the internet. He came to the U.S. as a 14-year old immigrant from a rural village in China, was ordained in 1895 as a Congregational minister; his children all graduated from the University of California, and one of his sons, Dr. Pond Mooar Jee, did post-graduate work at Harvard.
