The Gold Hunters by J.D. Borthwick (1823 - 1892) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: http://librivox.org/the-gold-hunters-by-j-d-borthwick/
This is a robust, rough and tumble, first-hand account of the early California gold rush years 1851-1854 by a Scottish adventurer and artist J. D. Borthwick. The first edition, published in 1857 was called Three Years in California. Reprints have used the more descriptive title The Gold Hunters. (Summary by Sue Anderson)

  • Target completion date: 2013-Apr-30
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://archive.org/stream/goldhunters01bort#page/n5/mode/2up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard
IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Sue,

Rumor has it, that you're in need of a DPLer. :D I'd be much obliged, if'n I could help you out.
A feeble attempt at trying to get into the 1850's mood.

Carolin and Hugh, Hey, thank you both so much for your offers of help. I'm much obliged! :D

Hugh, This is a lively book; There is at least one place in it "less suited to delicate sensititvies," which actually made me hesitant about reading it for Librivox for about a year (a description of an actual bear and bull fight), but I finally decided, well, if that's what Californians during the gold rush years really did . . . Borthwick was a fine illustrator, and he has an illustration of the scene, which you can see by pulling up one of the first editions (titled Three Years in California) on Archive.org. I decided to read from one of the reprints because the title, The Gold Seekers, is certain to attract more listeners. . .

Carolin and Hugh, again thanks and best wishes,

Hi Hugh, Am really pleased to have you DPL this one and I hope you enjoy it! :D Here is the first installment. I'm actually going to follow Borthwick's chapters (he has 27), just dividing three chapters that are extra long into 2 parts, which is how we total out at 30 sections; and, so, you'll find that I introduced the first section as "chapter 1, part 1" instead of my usual "section 1" because section 2 will be "chapter 1, part 2." . . .
