Hello!

I was wondering if book chapters were aloud.

For example chapter 1 and chapter 8 of this book https://www.gutenberg.org/files/26978/26978-h/26978-h.htm#VIII

Would that be permitted or does it need to be a standalone text?

Hi TorriBee, Welcome to the Short Nonfiction Collection! :D

To answer your question about chapters of books, yes, individual chapters of books are fine to read for the SNF, as long the selected chapters would make sense to a listener who didn't have access to the whole book. You could combine the 2 chapters you mention into a single read and title it something like "Chapters 1 and 8 from Salem Witchcraft and Cotton Mather" by Charles W. Upham, and then announce the Chapter titles as you go along.

This would be an excellent contribution to the SNF. Looking forward to hearing it!

Hi, Here's my second contribution to this collection:

Artists Look at Roads
from Public Roads Magazine, Summer 1996, Vol. 60, No. 1
by Richard F. Weingroff

Public Roads Magazine
is a publication of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration

https://highways.dot.gov/public-roads/summer-1996/artists-look-roads

Taking advantage of U.S. gov. publications being PD, this recording looks at a couple of contemporary artists, Wayne Thiebaud and the Detroit based Lowell Boileau (https://www.atdetroit.net). Boileau has been active in the quest to document Detroit's old buildings:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wdJFF7zsJQ.

~~~ I'm looking for a volunteer to PL this, since as DPL of the SNF, I can't very well PL my own work.
Hi ToriBee,
Thank you for this interesting read about the Mathers and the Salem Witchcraft Trials! :D Determining what constitutes "good evidence" in a court of law is certainly as relevant a question today as it was in Mather's time, when the validity of "spectral evidence," was being debated.
There are just a few edits needed for your recording:
There are 2 repeats that need to be cut:
at 9:45 ("and the Lord Chief Baron)
at 30.42.5 ("so long as it was suffered..."}
There is one place where you you left out part of a sentence:
on page 31, at 19.23.5, you left out the words "in his own mind, to the belief and reception of spectral evidence" from the sentence which begins "Indeed throughout his account . . ."
And there is one misread:
on page 32, at 28.02.5, the text reads "Accordingly, I ever protested against it . . ." You said "Accordingly I never protested against it."
When these places are fixed, your read with be pl ok.
Here's a short account of a Scottish battle: Grampian Hills battle, Anno 85, first chapter from the History of the Wars in Scotland, by John Lawrie
duration 5:40
I did skip the word "unarmed" in the phrase "the swords of their unarmed foes" as it didn't make sense :hmm:
Hi Rapunzelina,
Thanks for this description of the Roman general Agricola's attempt to extend Rome's dominion into the Scottish highlands. It is PL OK as read.
I tried to figure out whether the sentence you mention could be construed in some meaningful way, rather than just being taken as a misprint. This led me to read another interesting account of the battle in John Hill Burton's History of Scotland from Agricola's Invasion to the Extinction of the Last Jacobite Insurrection, vol. 1 https://books.google.com/books?id=vXjSAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA18&dq, wherein is a discussion of Tacitus' history of the battle. . . As DPL, I learn something new every day!
Anyway, my alternative take on the sentence is that, perhaps, what is being said is that the courageous but naked and unarmed Britons, rather than being taken prisoners, committed suicide by "running themselves" on some of the sharp Roman swords which were lying about, strewn on the battlefield. Who knows. . .
"It was a most dismal spectacle to behold the open plain, in one place, the Romans pursuing, wounding some, killing others, and taking some prisoners; whilst in another place, the courageous Britons turned upon their pursuers; and, rather than be taken prisoners, some of them, naked and unarmed, rushed upon the swords of their unarmed foes, and thereby exposed themselves to a voluntary death. All the field was strewed with weapons, limbs, and the dead bodies of men, and the earth was dyed with blood." John Lawrie
