Chapter 20, from the beginning to end of the sentence "So much for the seed of success." (page 292) and picking up again on page 293 with the paragraph beginning "But though I said that nothing will grow but seed..."

Christopher Whall (1849 - 1924) designed stained glass windows for many churches in England. He was an active participant in the arts and crafts movement. His text book for workers in glass was part of a series whose stated aim was "to put artistic craftsmanship before people as furnishing reasonable occupations for those who would gain a livelihood."

Thank you, Winston! I thought one of the most interesting parts of William James' remarks in his description of how quickly the "common people" came together in the aftermath of the earthquake to "improvise order out of chaos:"

"It is clear that just as in every thousand human beings there will be statistically so many artists, so many athletes, so many thinkers, and so many potentially good soldiers, so there will be so many potential organizers in times of emergency. In point of fact, not only in the great city, but in the outlying towns, these natural ordermakers, whether amateurs or officials, came to the front immediately. There seemed to be no possibility which there was not some one there to think of, or which within twenty-four hours was not in some way provided for."

I'm going to asking one small favor of you --to revise your file name; once Craig has PL'd your contribution, could you please re-upload your file with the author's name (James) all in small letters. I sympathize; it goes against the grain of all the "proper spelling rules" we were brought up with, but in file names, only small letters are allowed....
