A collection of pieces, both fiction and non-fiction, that have as its subject a word beginning with a specific letter of the English alphabet. Subjects can range from coffee to tea, animals to vampires, law to emotions.

• 1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? There is no set text. A good place to look is Project Gutenberg Bookshelf.
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

  Need noise-cleaning?
  Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The latest version of Audacity is recommended for noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

  128 kbps MP3
  atozed_##_various_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. atozed_01_various_128kb.mp3)

A to Zed Collection Vol. 001

This collection is dedicated to recordings of short fiction and nonfiction works in English which are in the Public Domain (generally meaning that they were published prior to 1924).

Please select and record any short fiction or nonfiction piece in the public domain. For clarification of what it means for a work to be "in the public domain," please see this section of the LibriVox Wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Copyright_and_Public_Domain. Try to stay with works that run less than 30 minutes. You may read up to 3 selections per volume. You must first claim your section---it will be marked with a letter of the alphabet. Once your claim is acknowledged please begin your recording. Multiple versions of stories and articles are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection for another collection; we're happy to hear your version too.

What makes this collection unique is that each recording should have as its subject a word that begins with a specific letter of the English alphabet. One selection for each letter will be allowed.

After the 26 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog, and make them available to the public.

1. RECORD:
Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16 or 32-bit.
At the BEGINNING say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"
If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."

Please leave no more than 1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording. Add about 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.


2. EDIT and SAVE your file:
Need noise-cleaning? See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
Save or export your recording to an mp3 file at 128kbs. Please use the format shown. Your file name should look like the one below, when you upload it.

Please keep the file name short. It isn't necessary to put the whole title in the file name - just a word or two. Please omit "a," "the," etc. from the title. Do not put spaces between words. Keep everything lower case. Even your initials should be lower case. The only underscores should be the separations between the [x] volume, title, author's last name, and your initials. There are only 4 underscores in a title!


3. UPLOAD your recording:
Please upload your finished recording using the LibriVox uploader: http://librivox.org/login/uploader. When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please copy and post to the current nonfiction thread. If you don't post the fact that you've uploaded your recording, the nonfiction book coordinator won't know that you did it!

I will edit the first post... but, in future, you can do this yourself to suit your own needs. For a collection like this, there is no 'set' way of doing it. In order to get the files in the right order, the file names will need to be alphabetized... so, for example, "Life of an Aardvark" followed by "Bears and Bunnies" would have to be "aardvark" to be followed by "bears".

Genius is discovering simplicity. You are a genius. I've been sitting here thinking, "Well, I could change file names myself. Or could I? And I could give instructions to use a file name that begins with the chosen letter, but would people SEE it? &c., &c.) Hahaha!

I think this would be an interesting collection. However, I don't think this should be the only collection of this we have, because there are so many things we could put into it. My only worry, is that it's going to be hard to find ones for letters like X, Y, & Z.
