Here is "Life Without Principle" by Henry David Thoreau.

Length: 56:12 (Barely made it!)
Size: 54 MB

This is my first recording but I think I've done everything correctly...I did get a warning in checker about "DC bias" but the volume and background noise checked out o.k.

I hope this will be okay for the Short Nonfiction Collection.

Obituary of Edgar A. Poe by John Moncure Daniel
(Appeared in the Richmond Semi-Weekly Examiner, Oct. 12, 1849)

Hi Jeff, Your contribution of Poe's obituary is a fine choice for the non-fiction collection. :) I know there are lots of listeners for Poe's stories on Librivox, and I think they will appreciate the biographical information. Since I see by the number of your forum posts so far that you are fairly new to Librivox, let me also take the opportunity to extend my personal WELCOME to you! Our dedicated proof listener, Hugh, will be listening to your recording, and both he and I will take a look at the technical end of things to help you along.
Best wishes,
Sue Anderson

Hi David, WELCOME TO LIBRIVOX! We're pleased that you chose the non-fiction collection for your first recording. :) Our DPL, Hugh, will be listening, and both he and I will be sure your technical things are ok. Thoreau is an excellent choice. I'm a fan of Thoreau myself, his journals in particular; have an old dog-eared 5 vol. set that I enjoy opening at random to see what he has to say.

Could you let us know what name you would like to be listed under as "reader" in the catalog? You can use your forum name, real name or whatever name you want. Thanks

Thank you! I'm looking forward to reading more. It was definitely more challenging than I imagined, but a lot of fun.

Morning Jeff,

Your recording is a bit loud at 95.4dB, we aim for 87 to 91dB, with 89dB being ideal. Here is a short video showing how to amplify or reduce the volume of your recording. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw

Except for the volume, PL is okay. I will spot check when your file when you resubmit.

Here is the link for the edited MP3 file: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/jo/snf029_obituaryofedgarapoe_daniel_jc.mp3

I don't know how to figure out how many dB the recording is. I tried to download Checker, but each time I do, it says that the file is damaged. If I need to further adjust the volume, please let me know.

Hi Jeff,

Still a bit loud at 94.1dB

I use a program called MP3 Gain to get the volume. You can find it here, http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/, it's freeware, very easy to use. Please to not use it to amplify your files as it does not actually amplify your file, but adds a bit of information to the file so that MP3 players will increase the volume, and this does not work on all MP3 players. Open the file and click on the "Track Analysis" button.

Okay, here's hoping the third time is a charm. According to MP3Gain, this should be 89.6 dB. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Hugh, Jeff, and David: Great going! Hugh, thanks very much for all the technical imput! :D I knew you would be a real help as dedicated proof listener to anybody starting out recording! And Jeff, thanks for tweaking your recording. My theory is that our recordings are going to be "out there" for a long time, so as good as we can get is a good. And David, to have mananaged a long (55 minute) recording the first time out without any corrections is quite an achievment! :) Good news from all to accompany a sunny early spring day!

Hi, here's my contribution:

Weathercocks and Vanes, by Warrington Hogg, from the Strand Magazine.

MP3: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/jo/snf029_weathercocksandvanes_hogg_gb.mp3

Text: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/20798

The length is 21:23, and the size, 19.5 MB.

I've been unable to discover birth and death dates for Warrington Hogg, or anything else about him, but I've gleaned from the magazine and from what he has written himself that he died sometime between November 1892 and the first part of 1893, not long after this piece was published. So well within the UK's Life plus 70 copyright law :). I wonder how many, if any, of these old weather vanes still exist!

Thanks,

Garth

Hi Garth, Thanks for your contribution to the 29th volume! :) Weathercocks and vanes . . . sounds delightful! This edition of the non-fiction collection actually has a DPL in the person of Hugh, who will be PLing your contribution shortly, and I hope to listen myself for the fun of it. I've always wanted a weathervane, but so far haven't indulged . . . maybe one with a flying wild goose. In this part of the country the wild geese land on top of the old abandoned barns and honk to announce themselves, looking a bit like weathervanes. . .
