On the technical end of things, the file name needs a bit of help. Here is how it goes:

You may want your initials to read differently. Also, I'm not sure how one would interpret "last name," so I left the full name in.

A couple of small technical issues. Volume is a bit low at 84.6 dB, we shoot for 89 dB. Here is a video by Phil Chenevert showing how to increase or decrease your volume. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw I use a program called MP3Gain to get the volume level. You can download it here http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/. It's a free program, very easy to use. Drag and drop your file into the main window, and click on Track Analysis. One note, please do not use MP3Gain to increase or decrease your volume, no amplification is actually done, MP3Gain adds a bit of information to the file so that MP3 players will play the file at a higher or lower volume, and it doesn't work for all MP3 players.

Ending silence needs to be 5 seconds. PL is okay, except for these issues.

Here in the States, the newspapers often run "how to live on a budget" articles siting the high cost of owing a car (gas, insurance, parking fees, etc.) and telling you it would be cheaper just to hire a cab when you want to go some place . . . so I got a laugh out of Ritchie's litany of horse cab ownership costs.

WELCOME TO LIBRIVOX! We’re pleased to see your first Librivox post here at the nonfiction collection. I’ll try to guide you through the steps in making your first recording. Essentially, there are three things you will want to do:

1)Make a short recording to check out the settings on your recording equipment. Instructions for this can be found here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test. You will be reading a short paragraph which begins ”People were pleased to find . . .” This reading is NOT an audition (we accept all readers); it’s just to be sure your recording equipment is all in order. (I did the 1-minute test exactly like this when I joined Librivox in 2008.) When your 1-minute test is complete, you will want to post it on this Librivox forum: viewforum.php?f=21. A volunteer with recording expertise will listen and help you along. When they say you’re ready to do an actual recording, you’re ready for step two.

2) Pick a public domain selection to read: I see you already have something in mind, which is good! I took a look at the “Girl’s Own Paper,” and it has several interesting non-fiction articles to choose from. I would recommend choosing just one for your first recording. The articles entitled “Every Girl a Business Woman,” which tells how to write a business letter is nonfiction, as are “The Amateur Church Organist,” and “Fashionable Embroidery.” If you would rather read a short story from the Girl’s Own Paper ( which include “Merle’s Crusade” and “The Shepherd’s Fairy,”) that is ok, too, but you will then want to submit your recording to the short story collection. If your selection is nonfiction, you are ready for step three:

3) Send up your finished public domain nonfiction recording (less than 60 minutes in length) to the current volume of the nonfiction collection. Right now volume 29 is still open, so you would send it here. If volume 29 is full by the time you finish your recording, just look for Volume 30 of the non-fiction collection under “readers wanted, short works, poetry and prose”: viewforum.php?f=19. We will proof listen your recording and add it to the collection!

Hi Rich, Thanks for posting your 1-minute test. I'm going to let our proof listener, Hugh, check the technical aspects, but it sounded fine to me. I also use a Samson mic.

Just a reminder that if 29th nonfiction volume is filled by the time you have recording ready (there are 19 contributions now, and the limit is 20), then the 30th volume will open in a few days.
