Hello hive brain,

I'm setting up a group project and the chapters in this novel are of lengths varying from 543 words to 10,757 words. I'd like to split up the longer chapters (all the ones over 8,000 words), but I've run into an interesting conundrum. Within each chapter, there are numbered parts, also of varying lengths (some have 2, some have 5, some have as many as 8 parts). I assumed that these numbers would need to be read as "Part x" within each chapter.

But if I've got split chapters, what do I have readers read at the start of each split chapter? It would sound odd to read, for example, "Chapter 14: Treachery, Part 2. Part 5."

Any suggestions welcomed!

Thanks,
Winnifred

Depending how long the various Parts are, you might do something like:
"Chapter 14, Treachery, Parts 1 through 4"
and
"Chapter 14, Treachery, Parts 5 through 8"

"Chapter 14, Treachery, Parts 5 through 8"
And just omit repeating "Part 1" or "Part 5" or read it as "Chapter 14, Treachery, Parts 1 through 4. Part 1"?

On further thought, I think it's probably necessary to include it. This will at least sound a bit less odd. I've had a go at dividing the long chapters up and it should work.

Thanks!

You might consider using the word "section":
"Chapter 14, Treachery, section 1, parts 1 through 4" or
"Chapter 14, Treachery, part 1, sections 1 through 4"

Or "Chapter 14a", "Chapter 14b" and use the parts as noted in the text. :hmm:

Oh, that’s much simpler! I’m going for that option.

Thanks!

Hm. That would work too. I'll have to have a debate with myself over which option to go for.

Thanks,
