Winnifred wrote: December 11th, 2023, 6:26 pm I decided to forego the dubious advantage of using the library equipment and brought my own laptop and mic to this session. Much less complicated, as I didn't have to transfer files (and risk losing them!) And I booked four hours, rather than three, so have managed to churn out three sections today. Here are sections 7, 8, and 9 for PL:

https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/earlyshortfictionvol1_07_wharton_128kb.mp3 (23:00)
https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/earlyshortfictionvol1_08_wharton_128kb.mp3 (7:29)
https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/earlyshortfictionvol1_09_wharton_128kb.mp3 (12:28)

With any luck, my next session in early January will allow me to record the last two sections of this story. The gravelly voice of Granice is starting to bug my throat!

You will likely notice that the sound on this one is different from the past few sections, as I'm using my own mic. I hope that's not too noticeable for anyone trying to listen to the whole book, but this was just so much easier. And much less editing required in this recording space. Now if only they'd let me come in once a week...

Cheers,
I think dubious is right and your own mic a good call. The sound quality is much better. All are PL OK - though I think the genre short fiction is being stretched with this story…

Happy New Year!

You're right; this story is anything but short. Here are the final two sections for PL:

https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/earlyshortfictionvol1_10_wharton_128kb.mp3 (15:00)
https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/earlyshortfictionvol1_11_wharton_128kb.mp3 (6:57)

Next one will probably follow in two weeks; that one'll be a standalone (an actual short story!)

Cheers,
Winnifred

Hi Paul,

Here's Section 12, The Dilettante, for proof listening: https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/earlyshortfictionvol1_12_wharton_128kb.mp3 (23:56)

This is a standalone, so no cliff-hangers. It's unlike the other stories in this book; a lot more subtleties and reading between the lines going on here. I had to read it several times to catch the drift, and even now, I'm not sure I've caught them all.

Cheers,
Winnifred

Now that’s a short story.

After one reading I can say it’s PL OK.

I agree there are many different interpretations worthy of multiple listens!

Sorry for the (for me) long silence, but life intervened.

Here, finally, is Section 13 - Part 1 of "The House of the Dead Hand": https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/earlyshortfictionvol1_13_wharton_128kb.mp3 (32:09)

This is the longest part of this story; the subsequent three sections are much shorter, and I'm hoping to get them all done at my next recording session on the 28th.

Cheers,
Winnifred

Forgot to say; in Section 16, I made a small correction to what appears to be an error in the text. At 3:36, I added the word “in” before “vain.” ("The next day, as Wyant entered the House of the Dead Hand, he remembered Count Ottaviano’s injunction to ring twice, and smiled mournfully to think that so much subtlety had been in vain.”) The sentence doesn’t really make sense without it, so I think this must have been an error in the text.

Cheers,
Winnifred

That is indeed the end of the book. All PL OK

Congratulations Winnifred! Beautifully read as ever.
