Essays Collection #01, by Various

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/essays-collection-vol-01-by-various/
Here are 20 essays by various authors, covering all kinds of subjects. Some are famous, others are gems ferreted out from chapters or passages in books where they have lain hidden for decades. Britannica defines an essay as "an analytic, interpretive, or critical literary composition usually much shorter and less systematic and formal than a dissertation or thesis and usually dealing with its subjects from a limited and often personal point of view." In short, an essay is neither fiction nor a short story, but a composition designed to educate/persuade more than entertain or inform, though essays sometimes do both, or neither. (Summary by Michele Fry, BC/DPL)
Where to find public domain essays? LV has numerous books containing essays by various authors (search "essays" from the home page), any of which could be a great source of specific titles that appeal to you.
  1. There is no need to preclaim. Just record and submit an essay with the requested information (see green text below).
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Once your essay is submitted, please be on the lookout for your Proof Listeners notes, which if changes are required must be attended to for your story to be included in the catalog.
If this is your first recording, please let the BC (msfry) know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Level of prooflistening: special (I will follow along with the text and notate significant discrepancies.)
Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ for the various levels used!

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Maybe you'll be first to contribute! I reckon you know where the best essays are hidden. :)

My essay's ready.

Who's going to be our MC? Should the file name include a two-or-three digit number, rather than a single digit?

And Note 1 in the opening page mentions some green text "below", which isn't.

Good morning, Peter. You're up early!

essays1 is okay here, as the 01 and 001 refer to section numbers. The files in collections are distinguished by title, author and reader and ordered alphabetically by one or the other of those (I can't remember which). Our discussion above on the 01 and 001 issue refers to the name of the project, which I changed to 01 with high expectations that it proves that popular. :D

Green text added back in. Thanks for catching that.

Feel free to submit your file while we wait for an MC.

Hi Michele! Let me MC this collection; I'm curious to see how it develops! :D

Can essays be shorter than 4 minutes? I've always imagined them to be long, extensive, opinionated pieces

Here you go. I had a little trouble with the way the author used the English language, so my emphasis may not match the meaning. Please ask me to rerecord if you spot something like that.

Great! And let me take out that 4 minute reference. I certainly don't want to suggest short, shallow pieces.

Thank you Peter. And our first effay is "in the can", read perfectly from stem to stern, despite all those 17th century f's for s's. Great job!

Yes, the fairly frequent mention of "capital" punishments and that certain death worried/puzzled me. I hope he was exaggerating.

Thomas Paine, a journalist, exaggerate? Surely not! Too bad we can't include more background on the history and significance of this essay, but here are some insights only recently discovered: https://allthingsliberty.com/2019/11/the-rise-of-thomas-paine-and-the-case-of-the-officers-of-excise/

An interesting article. The commisioner who, according to the book quoted in the article, asked Paine to work on the pamphlet, was probably the one Paine referred to in it.

The book mentioned in the article might mention the possible capital punishments.

Here is my first contribution. I will need someone for PL duties. Perhaps Peter would reciprocate????
