Do you mean those few blank lines on page 458?

Let's see... I think the proper transcription of them into Latin characters would be...

Wyrde bidan
Tanum laedan

In the last few days, I've tried to learn more about these unfamiliar characters, so I think I've gotten this right. I'm not terribly confident that I can interpret this correctly, especially since I didn't read much of the surrounding poetry for context. But I think it would be something like

A tree (or wooden) might he (or it) grow
Abide fate
Bring forth branches

I would feel much better about this if I could figure out who or what the pronoun refers to. Branches here could refer to the branches of a family. Not really sure. The real mystery is, why were these lines not translated in this volume? Maybe they are just notoriously difficult and nobody knows what to do with them, in which case, I must have really jumped off the deep end with my paltry attempt!

Anyway, thanks for the challenge! I enjoyed it immensely and spent far too much time on it!

Sections 3 & 4 are PL OK! You always appear at unexpected points in my projects and I start listening and think "Who's that good reader with good audio?" and it turns out to be you. Great work on a wooden translation.

As for the translation seeming "wooden," I suspect it's because it is a pretty straightforward word-by-word translation, rather than thought-by-thought. The word order seems to remain pretty much the same, for the most part, as the original. It doesn't seem that there was any attempt to render this into something that a modern English speaker would be able to grasp easily. Which is great for a language scholar, but less so for a casual poetry reader.

(Also thanks for letting me nerd out a bit in your project!)

ie. He might grow into a tree, fate allowing, and put forth branches?
Very cool. I would not add them to the reading, but good to know, especially learning that Tanum is branches (Tannenbaum). Thank you!

Having said that, the missing translation is at the end of the selection on p. 459. The translation ends with "earth", then follow 5 lines on the OE side and 5 different lines on the English side that appear to be untranslated. I will try to comb the rest of the text for look-alikes, but don't expect to come out with a useable translation.

2. I read the number of the riddle.
3. Riddle 12 ends with a bunch of stuff I don't know how to read. So I didn't.

Was there a URL that I missed for this?

For the untranslated things, could you add a note that says "Riddle 1 is untranslated" and for riddle 12 "The text here is untranslated"?
