Wonderful London, by Anonymous

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:https://librivox.org/wonderful-london-by-anonymous/
"Wonderful London, its lights and shadows of humour and sadness". (That's the full title of the book.) A collection of short essays, studded with conversation, on aspects of Victorian London life, seen through the eyes of a middle-class narrator.

NOTES:
1 A "ticket of leave" is a document of parole issued to convicts who can be trusted with a degree of freedom.
2 In Chapter three, a "cornopean" is a reed organ.
3 In Chapter twenty, "negus" is a drink made from port mixed with hot water, citrus fruit, spices and sugar.

(Summary by Peter Yearsley)

Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Peter,

I'd like to sign on as DPL if you're in need of one.

Thanks, Laura, that will be a great help. I've not been able to think of any key words yet, so I'd be grateful if you could suggest any when we're up and running (or any ideas for a summary!). I have the first chapter recorded already. We just need our MC.

Thanks, Anne. I think it's going to be a fairly long run, with 41 chapters.

Laura, here's the first chapter: https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/wonderfullondon_01_anonymous_128kb.mp3

Chapter one: pdf pages 16-30

I'll fill in the details on the magic window later; I wasn't able to get it done just now.

Anne, could you set me up as the reader in the MW, please? I've tried, but I get a "loading" display for minutes, with nothing happening.

Thank you both for having me along.

I'll try to think of some suggestions for keywords as we go along, Peter. Summaries have always been a weak point for me, so I don't think I'll be of much help there.

I really enjoyed listening to chapter 1.
There's a small repeat ~1:24 "at the rate of..."

Thanks for catching that, Laura. Chapter one edited and re-uploaded.

I enjoyed it, too. I'm looking forward to the rest of the book (I read cold - except for poetry and DRs - which does mean a fair bit of repeating while I'm recording, and lots of editing, but saves reading the book twice and possibly being bored when I make the recording!).

EDIT: It's going to be quite a miscellany, so we'll either need lots of keywords, or a few generic ones. The summary will probably not be much more than we have already, but there's months of recording to go ... which may lead to a revelation.

Hi Peter,

Section 1 is good to go.

In chapter two there are several missing paragraphs ~3:26 after the one on page 32 of the pdf with text ending, "The police were well aware, or, if they were not, undoubtedly they should have been, since I was taken there, and told all about it, by a well-known clergyman of the district."

After that the recording skips to page 36 of the pdf with the paragraph, "It is because Lint-street in the Burrough seems to be so completely given over..."

All else was good.

I'm sorry about the mess I made of Chapter Two; I've no idea what happened. Luckily, I keep my aup files (three of them for this chapter), so I'm recreating the chapter. I'm afraid you're going to have to go through much of it again.

My apologies.
