Chapter 28 is PL OK

So far I've watched the episodes about the Great Fire of London and Richard Trevithick. I think I'll watch London's Lost Prison next.

Thanks for the PL, Laura. I've uploaded Chapter 29; another sympathetic one. Gaol-birds at large pdf pages 391-398 / text pages 366-373

I've not seen the Lost Prison one; I'll have to see if I can find it.

Chapter 29 is PL OK

It's unfortunate that some get caught in an endless cycle they can't seem to overcome.

Thanks, Laura.
I'm certain that it's still difficult for first offenders to get out of that pattern of behaviour.

Here's Chapter 30 - St. Valentine's shabby suit pdf 399-406 / text 374-381

... revealing an aspect of Victorian life that I had never known about, the vicious Valentine card. I searched and found this page about them: https://www.history.com/news/victorian-valentines-day-cards-vinegar

I had no idea! It was quite shocking to learn people sent these cards, but doubly so that it was thought nearly half of the Valentine's sent were the 'vicious' ones.

Perhaps even the Victorians got sick of cherubs and roses. :D Anne

That may be true, but I'm not sure; from the text of that chapter, the "vinegar Valentines" could be extremely vicious and unpleasant. It's odd that we don't seem to have an equivalent these days, although there are some cards on sale with fairly scatalogical humour. The article I gave a link to mentions that sending the vinegar Valentines "went out of favour", but it's not completely clear why. Apparently the cards weren't sent in envelopes, as they are now, and the post office workers refused to handle the more unpleasant ones.

It's hard to understand the urge to send a card implying that a couple's first child isn't of the husband's get ... but then it's hard to understand some of the videos we see on youtube of people kicking beggars' food away, or knocking over prams. Although the card is a lot more personal, and has been sent by someone who knows the recipient. I wonder if anyone has made a study of this side of Victorian life?

I've uploaded chapter 31: A young vagabond's vacation pdf 407-413 / text 382-388

I think he's lost focus and is rambling again!

At least it was a short chapter he wandered about and maybe he'll stumble back into focus with the next one.

Thanks, Laura. Here's Chapter 33: "Birds of a feather" - pdf pages 424-431 / text 397-404

I think the author must have been savaged by a chaffinch when he was a small child!

I much prefer peaceful birdwatching in nature than to the antics of what happened in this chapter.

I agree; thanks for the PL, Laura.

I've uploaded Chapter 34. A difficult chapter to read, as it exposed a pattern of human behaviour that I detest.

I totally agree. It's so hard for me to understand how people can knowingly act in such a despicable way and have no care whatsoever for how his actions affects others.

Chapter 34 is PL OK but I did question if maybe there's a misprint in the text:

~7:38 "But it is a mere matter of form, since it is not in the least likely that he will be called on to render his household gods." I don't normally question the text but in this case I wonder if 'gods' is a misprint for 'goods' ? (top of page 409 of the text)

Also, this file was a bit louder than your others, showing 94.6 db in the checker. I don't know if the file needs to be reuploaded with the sound reduced or if Anne can smooth it out at cataloging to match the others.
