The Invalid's Hymn Book, edited by Harriet Kiernan ( - 1834)
"The following selection of Hymns has been made for the use of persons in great bodily weakness. … The present object is to afford, in large print, a few hymns, which seem most likely to cheer and animate the weak." -Excerpt from the introductory material

The hymns in this book are arranged topically as follows:
PART 1: Hymns suited to the awakened inquirer (Hymns 1-33)
PART 2: Hymns suited to the humble penitent, and rejoicing believer (Hymns 34-85)
PART 3: Hymns suited to seasons of severe suffering, mental or bodily (Hymns 86-129)
PART 4: Hymns suited to the dying Christian (Hymns 130-172)
Supplemental Hymns Adapted to Particular Occasions

IMPORTANT NOTES TO READERS:
* Be sure to number your file names with a total of three digits, since there are more than 99 sections. This means that many sections will need one or more leading zero in the file name. For example, hymn 1 should be numbered 001.
* We will treat this book as a book of poetry, not a book of music. Some of these hymns will be familiar to you, and you will feel the urge to sing them. Resist the urge. I do not intend to check the copyright status of 184 melodies. If you sing your submission, it will not be accepted.

Deadline: Please submit your recording within 2 months of placing your claim. If you cannot complete the recording within this time, please post in the thread to relinquish your claim or to ask the BC for an extension. If your recording is not completed by the deadline, your claim may be reassigned at the BC's discretion.

Claiming sections: Look in the Magic Window below for the list of available sections. Post a reply in this thread asking for the section you would like to record.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

I heard about this hymn book yesterday and immediately ran to Internet Archive to check it out. I think it will make a really lovely group project!

Looking for a DPL. I will probably end up reading the introductory stuff myself, unless somebody else really wants it.

Also, I'll finish filling in the MW with page numbers tomorrow. It's late and I need a shower. Good night! :D

I've often thought of a hymn book for a project, so how could I resist?
But, it will take me some time to pick a few to start with.

Wouldn't mind being DPL, but want to read a good selection of these.

I'll be back with some choices!

ETA: Let me take a handful from the middle. SECTIONS: 77,82,90,93,105

(I predict a lot of confusion between hymn numbers and section numbers).

You might also clarify if you want the verse numbers read, or skipped. Personally, I prefer the latter in keeping with the poetic emphasis. And I assume you want the Scripture quotations read that appear at the beginning of some of the hymns, and the Headings for the main divisions when they occur, as:

PART III.

HYMNS SUITED TO SEASONS OF SEVERE SUFFERING,

MENTAL OR BODILY.

LXXXVI.

"My words shall not pass away.” — Matt.

Ok, Larry, you've convinced me. I was waffling back and forth on the numbering for a while. The only way I could think of to keep the numbers consistent was to put ALL of the introductory stuff in a section zero, but there's a lot of introduction here, and I didn't really want to jam it all together. I still think that it would be nice to be able to separate out all of the stuff at the beginning, but you're right. It just makes the MW that much more complicated. And claiming, too, which I hadn't thought of. So I went ahead and renumbered the MW according to that scheme and assigned the massive introduction to myself. However, umm.... I didn't think to assign the sections you asked for until AFTER I'd renumbered everything. So please make sure that I gave you the ones you wanted!

Larry is in as DPL, all claims are entered (hopefully correctly), and I'll move this over to Short Works.

Oh yes. And for your questions. My personal preference would be to not read the verse numbers, but I'm not really bothered if people do read them, so I won't give direction on that. I do not want the "Part" divisions read. I put that information in the description, and I think it is sufficient to just have it there. I do want the Scripture quotations read. Thanks!

Well, okay then. I'll take on the DPL.
I'll enjoy listening to these. :)

I think you got my claims correct, but I haven't checked them all.
Huge job revising the MW. But, I think this will make things smoother as we go along.

Introduction: How about you take the Preface and Addendum, and I read the rest?
Just a thought.

Oh, did I misunderstand your earlier post? I already put you in as DPL! You know I'm always willing to PL your sections, though.

Revising the MW is really pretty simple. I just deleted the extra sections (only admins can do this, though), and the rest renumber themselves.

I don't at all mind reading all of the introductory stuff, and in fact was leaning towards doing that anyway. The reason I originally wanted to split them was that I thought it might make listening easier. Thanks for the offer! (The only other question is whether it will all fit within 74 minutes. I think it will, though.)

What an interesting collection of hymns. Most I've never heard (and I'm a church organist.) May I please record: 35 Just As I Am; 76 Guide Me; 144 When Waves of Trouble; and 140 Forever With the Lord.

Thank you for this project. :D
