The Letter, A Play in Three Acts, by W. Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965)

Volunteers outside the USA: W. Somerset Maugham died in 1965. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
The wife of a plantation manager in "British Malaysia" shoots a man of their acquaintance while her husband is away from home. She claims that the man she shot had attempted to rape her. Her lawyer supposes that her defense will be rather straightforward until his law clerk informs him that a blackmailer possesses evidence that will incriminate her. The defendant and her lawyer must determine whether it is best to 'explain away' the potentially damning implications of the titular letter or pay the sum demanded for its suppression. The Letter premiered (24 February 1927) at London's Playhouse Theatre where it ran 60 weeks starring Dame Gladys Cooper who was also the play's producer. While in rehearsal Maugham rewrote Act 3 using an innovative flashback to portray events preceding the shooting with which Act 1 opens. Katharine Cornell starred in the Broadway production which opened (26 September 1927) at the Morosco Theatre and ran for 104 performances. This production reverted to the original script, scrapping the flashback in favor of the lead actor's recantation of its events. This audio book production includes both versions of Act 3.(Summary by Brian Fullen)

Hi Brian!

If you are accepting early claims, may I play Leslie?

Oh, yes, please do! If you don't mind, might I ask that you read the part with Bette Davis eyes! (I'm looking at the poster for the Wyler film adaptation at the moment  )

Hi Brian
Glad you are doing this as it is a great play. I saw it years ago and the gunshot before the curtain rose created a stunned atmosphere in the theatre.

Unfortunately I cannot get involved as Maughan is definitely not PD for me :(

As NZ is still on 50 years post death of author, I can offer to read Howard Joyce.

Why, oh why, doesn't anyone want to be in Robert Crosbie's position?

Hi Todd,

My apologies for not having caught this earlier, but in the Brief Summary I referred to Robert Crosbie as a 'plantation owner' whereas it's clear in Act 3 that he is an employee of a corporation that owns the plantation on which he works and resides. It's also clear that the character is invested in other plantation and has had a desire to acquire a plantation under his sole proprietorship by selling his stakes in those others. At least that's what I get out of the dialog in Act 3.

I've made a slight change to the Brief Summary, calling him a 'plantation manager', though I don't really know anything about corporate management structures of plantations in British colonies of the early 20th century, so that job title might not be precise.

I plan to update the notes fields in the MW with character thumbnail bios but I probably won't get around to doing that until tomorrow at the earliest.

Thank you again for agreeing to MC this project.

Best wishes,
Brian

Please DO NOT disregard the APPENDIX that follows the [first] "THE END" of The Letter:

The APPENDIX contains an alternative version of Act 3 of the play that includes a dialog between Leslie Crosbie and Geoff Hammond, in the form of a "throwback" (flashback). We will produce two complete versions of Act 3:
  • With Leslie summarizing what transpired between herself and Geoffrey before she pulled the trigger (again, and again, and ...) on him during the course of her post-acquittal confession to Robert and Howard
  • With, instead, a "throwback" (Maugham's word) revealing their interaction via dialog (stage direction, etc.) in place of Leslie's recollection. Sort of a mid-act three prequel to Act 1

For this project we will also record the APPENDIX

Thank you.

EDIT: June 30, 2023.

EDIT: July 2, 2023
PS, I'll try not to reverse myself again  On this project, anyway  Well, at least as regards the Appendix.
