Catalogs to Sleep By, by Various

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/catalogs-to-sleep-by-by-various/
Excerpts from vintage catalogs, read in a soft, soothing voice and meant to lull you to sleep. Drift off to dreamland with details of such topics as bowling alley or railroad truck construction, museum exhibits, Kodak cameras, seeds, and baseballs. In other words, be bored to sleep. Inspired by the podcast Boring Books for Bedtime. (Summary by Verla Viera)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Another one that might be fun for your list is this:
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015012161421&view=1up&seq=1

I was planning to read the History section for the Non-Fiction collection sometime soon but the bibliography section is basically a catalog of every release by legendary horror publication Arkham House in its first 20 years. :)

Thanks, Ben! Ten is enough for now, but I have other collections in mind. Two of the selections are book lists, but no horror!

So, a kind of solo Insomnia Collection, eh?

I'll set this up for you. :)

EDIT: Set up!

I assume "Anonymous" and "Jean Lee Hunt" aren't the only authors, correct? In which case, I've set the author to "Various" and changed the file name to that also. You'll add the author of each section in the metadata in the Magic Window. (Have you done that before? That, and the text source of each section.)

If an author is unknown, better to put "unknown" than "anonymous" - as "anonymous" is more a deliberate action on the author's part to remain incognito, whereas "unknown" is someone who is simply unknown. ;)

If any of the authors don't pop up in the author list when entering their last name, let me know their information so I can enter them into the database. Then you'll be able to add them.

Clear as mud? Let me know if you need anything else.

Yes, a solo insomnia collection!

The issue with the author thing is that except for the one written by Jean Lee Hunt, they are all corporate authors, as we librarians would say. So, for example, I just recorded the first one, and in the intro said, "By Naragansett Machine Company." This is also how the gutenberg files list the authors. I think the only one actually listed as Anonymous is Brief Guide: National Gallery of Art. If I were cataloging that for a library, I'd list the National Gallery itself as the author.

So, Jean Lee Hunt is the only personal author named. She wasn't in the database. Also, I wasn't able to find any information for her. But the book is gutenberg and has a 1918 date, so I know we're good to go that way. When you Google her, mostly this book, A Catalogue of Play Equipment, comes up.

I've never done anything with the metadata in the MW, though I see what comes up when clicking on the magnifying glass. That brings us to the same problem with the name. I can put unknown there? And the URL listed in the first post is what goes in source?

I await your enlightenment.

I've entered Jean Lee Hunt and most of the corporate authors, except for the U of W. Still working on it. :)

I agree with you about the National Gallery of Art. I'll make sure that's added, too.

Yes, click on the magnifying glass and add the author and text link (as you have in the first post) in their fields. Leave the duration, language. and MP3 URL ones blank; they'll be taken care of at cataloging time.

Yay! I learned to do something new! :) (See what I was saying recently about you're one of the ones who have taught me everything?)

The only catch was I didn't find Richmond Mill Furnishing Works. Can you double check that, please?

Excited about this collection; thanks for MCing and for your help in setting it up!

Ah - that one, after looking at the text, looked like it was by Nordyke, Marmon & Co. rather than the furnishing works themselves. So I put that into the author database.

Sorry I missed mentioning it earlier!

Great - they're all in now, and hopefully all correctly.

Just one other question. After the last section, do I say, "End of Catalogs to Sleep By, by Various," or can I just say, "End of Catalogs to Sleep By" ?

You can just say "End of Catalogs to Sleep By"... or, since this is a collection rather than a regular book, you could probably leave out the "end of project" part altogether. (We don't have them in group collection projects, either.)

Tricia,

Would it be ok for me to self-PL this? As I've been recording, I've been thinking about what a challenge it would be to find the excerpts. I'd have to make detailed notes on some of these sections, or the PL would have to dig through the texts trying to figure out what I included.

I've self-PL'd a section or two before as a BC. I let at least a few days pass so I'm seeing with fresh eyes as I follow the text.

What do you think?

I'm surprised you self-PL'd before. Unless in very exceptional circumstances, we want a different set of ears to PL. The exception I can think of is a less popular language in which we don't have someone to PL.

Unless you specify special or word-perfect PL, the DPL doesn't have to follow along with the text anyway.

OK, thanks. When a PL shows up, I'll send a note with an explanation.
