A School for Greybeards; or, The Mourning Bride, by Hannah Cowley (1743 - 1809)
Cowley: "I offer the following Comedy to the public, under a circumstance which has given my mind the most exquisite uneasiness. On the morning after the first representation, it was observed by the papers that there had been persons present at the Theatre the previous evening, who went there determined to disapprove at all events." This play of 1786 is based on Aphra Behn's "Lucky Chance" of 100 years earlier. By moving the scenes from London to far away romantic Portugal, Cowley thought to avoid criticism for the way she treated aspects of marriage in the play. She was unsuccessful in this, and had to alter the scripts for continued performances. In the published version on which this recording is based, she had restored the changes she had to make. Cowley explains some of this in an opening address in the publication, herein included at the end of Act 5 to avoid spoilers to the action of the play.
(Summary by ToddHW and Author)
Here's another Cowley. And yes, those pesky f's for s's throughout: you can do it!

Gender neutral casting.

Sonia will try to keep you under control as your DPL. Cowley moved events in this play to far off Portugal so to try to get away with things not necessarily allowed in London society, but don't you make Sonia's job harder than it will already be!

100 years ago, or maybe longer, when dinosaurs walked the earth and people like me listened to records, there was a PDQ Bach record called "The Stoned Guest". The bass singer of this silly opera parody was called "Don Octave" and his voice was unbelievably low (probably tinkered with). Also, I think he never breathed (again tinkering, methinks) - held a note for the entire second side of the record if I am remembering correctly.

I smiled as I put Don Octave in the MW - and then corrected the spelling to what Cowley wanted. Thank you for choosing him.
