Back to Methuselah: A Metabiological Pentateuch, by George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/back-to-methuselah-by-george-bernard-shaw/
In this late work, Shaw examines many contemporary issues under the broad rubric of evolution and then illustrates his opinions in five brief plays set in widely separated historical periods, beginning in the Garden of Eden and ending in the year 31,920 A.D. The unifying principle in this historical survey is the notion that the survival of humankind depends on increasing our lifespan to at least 300 years, a period permitting us to grow to maturity. The ultimate question that the mature cast of characters grapple with is what is to be the next significant step in evolution. Mere longevity simply enables them to ask this question. We see in the final play the beginning of the answer: first, escape from the social experiment, which began with Cain, a long and toilsome journey towards anarchy, and then gradual liberation from the grossness of physical imperfection and at last from bondage to flesh itself into immortality. What might lie beyond that, the author leaves to the imagination. (Summary by Thomas A. Copeland)

Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This has been on my “to do” list for a while, but I’ve never had the courage to officially launch it. I even color-codes a bunch of scripts for it ages ago!

Anyway, very happy someone else is launching this. I’ll help out in any way I can (recording or editing, if you need help) once the MW is filled out.
PROJECTS
Current Solo:Septimius Felton (Hawthorne's final novel)
Help Needed: The Third Violet (dramatic reading - lots of romance!)

I assume this will be a solo, if not please let me know, especially if you intend as a drama with parts. If it's a solo I'll set it up for you. An excellent project by the way either way.

Hi Chuck
It looks like this will be a solo project so I think you should be brave and launch it as a DW. I will help if I can but I will not read the Stage Directions as GBS's stage directions are usually longer than the rest of the play

Hi, my thought was to make it a solo project. It's awkward to read all the parts but only because one has to read the speaker's name all the time. The switching personality is fun. I drove to Canada between proposing the project and settling down to read, but now I'm ready to go. Does it matter where I start? I'd like to start with Adam and Eve, just to see how it goes.

Uh ..... not sure what you mean by starting with Adam and Eve please explain more. If you mean start with Part I, Act 1, that sounds logical. If there is some other scheme you have in mind, then let's talk.

Yes, Part I, Act 1. If the DPL doesn't find the first two sections boring or absurd, I will feel that the project as I have conceived it may work. The little essays should present no special difficulty, but playing multiple parts in a drama is a challenge.

This is set up.

Since we have a DPL already, I'll move this to Going Solo right away. :)

Section 3: just one comment. Usually in plays the narrator only reads the character name when it is accompanied by stage direction. See viewtopic.php?p=2168167&hilit=narrator+character+names#p2168167

It's a little different if one person is reading all the parts, no? Or is the voice different enough for each character to differentiate them?

I feel like the voices and the content is enough to differentiate them. That said,I am not feeling strongly either way if both are allowed.
Best,
Christine
