Oil! by Upton Sinclair (1878 - 1968)

Volunteers outside the USA: Upton Sinclair died in 1968. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
The two main characters of “Oil” are James Arnold Ross, called “Dad”, and his son James Jr., called “Bunny”. The book is loosely
based on a real character (Edward L. Doheny) and some real events and locations, mostly in Southern California. The period was
World War 1, and the events were not unlike those of the Teapot Dome Oil Scandal during the Harding administration. Like many of
Sinclair’s novels, themes concern social conflicts and injustices, labor vs. management, democracy vs. socialism, and morality vs.
immorality. In this story, Bunny’s father is a very successful oil entrepreneur, and ultimately a millionaire. There is great love
between Bunny and his father, but over time, Bunny begins to question his father’s ethics. Bunny is a seeker for truth, throughout the
story, as he grows through several decades—as a youth, as a soldier, as a college student, and as a wealthy oil producer. Religion
plays a big role in the story, as one of the characters becomes a charismatic evangelist preaching a new faith, “the third revelation.”
The film “There Will Be Blood” bases much of its story on this book. (Summary by Bob Rollins)

MW coming up.

edit: You can start this now or after you finished your current book. I'd use the word chapter with its number (not the section number) in the intros/outros. The very first section (i.e. section 0) could be called the "preface" in the intro/outro.

I have finished Chapter 01. However, Checker says it fails because it is over 60 minutes. I think that librivox says a file can be 72 minutes. This one is 62 minutes. Questions: Do I try to upload it even if "failed". If I need to break it in to two files, is there some special ways to do so.

62 minutes is ok. Ignore Checker in this instance.

Dave: Many of the chapters in "Oil" are going to be quite long, well over the 72 minute limit. Can you tell me how I am to split them into two files (as regards the titling, numbering, etc.)?

I added titles for Chapter 2 assuming it would require two sections (audio files) to complete. The filenames would have the section numbers 02 and 03 in them (e.g., oil_02_sinclair_128kb.mp3 and oil_03_sinclair_128kb.mp3, respectively). In the intros you might say "Chapter 2" and "Chapter 2, continued" for sections 2 and 3 rather than mention the part numbers (1-4 and 5-9). I lean towards using the part numbers in both the titles and the audio recording but it's your decision.

Let me know if this makes sense to you.

I have uploaded an altered Chapter 01, changing my "sections" to "parts".
Also, I have uploaded a Chapter 02, and a Chapter 02, Continued. I think it unlikely that I properly understood your advice. Just try to educate me again.

I renumbered the filename. The number in the name is the section number not the chapter number. The next chapter (Chapter 3) is section 4 so you will use 04 in the filename (https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/oil_04_sinclair_128kb.mp3).

File naming is perfect! I'll listen to these later today/tomorrow. Strong storms coming through right now so time to batten down the hatches. Ok, maybe just bring in the hanging potted plants.
