Six Months at the White House, by Francis Bicknell Carpenter (1830 - 1900)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/six-months-at-the-white-house-by-francis-bicknell-carpenter/

This memoir by painter Francis Bicknell Carpenter includes observations he made during his time at the White House from February-July 1864, while painting Abraham Lincoln's portrait. We see him in this book of Mr, Carpenter’s to that advantage which perfect unaffectedness and sincerity can never lose. During the time that Mr. Carpenter was making studies for his picture of the President signing the Emancipation Proclamation, he was in daily contact with him,—saw him in consultation with his Cabinet, at play with his children, receiving office-seekers of all kinds, granting many favors to poor and friendless people, snubbing Secession insolence, and bearing patiently much impertinence from every source,—jesting, laughing, lamenting. (summary adapted from The Atlantic, November 1866).

Hi Arten. I'll MC this for you.

Since this will be your first project as soloist/book coordinator(BC), you will need to set up a password for access to the workflow system so you can enter the information into the section compiler which then appears in the "Magic Window" in the top post. Here are some links to detailed instructions for logging into the system and setting a password the first time, as well as for entering and editing information in the section compiler.

First Time Logging in to the Workflow

Instructions for BCs and DPLs

A version of the above is also in the LibriVox wiki in case you can't access Google Docs for some reason.

BCs - How to Update the Magic Window

If you have any questions, let me know. I'll leave this thread here in the Launch Pad for a day or so longer before I move it to the Going Solo forum, to see if a DPL (Dedicated Prooflistener) volunteers. Looking forward to working with you.

I see you have requested 15 sections. The book appears to have 80 chapters plus a preface. Do you plan to combine multiple chapters in each section?

Hi Arten,

I've added Rapunzulina as DPL and am moving the thread out of the LaunchPad and over to Going Solo. You will find it there at the same link when you are ready to begin. Do post when you get a chance so we know you are still planning to record this project. It looks very interesting...:)

The chapters are pretty short, and would in some cases amount to only a couple minutes per, so I planned out relatively even selections to keep within the 10-40 range that we're encouraged to maintain.

Am still planning on recording, and going to do the first part today, if I can set everything up. Excited to work on it.

Again, great work on this!

Just one repeat at 10:08 "the president" (and the pause before "Chapter 12" at 10:00 is a bit longer than the rest if you'd like to check that out).

Oh, that's embarrassing, haha. For some reason I skipped going over those first parts of Chapter 12, because I definitely would not have left that as it was had I actually gone over it. Thanks for the feedback and the kind words!

Should be updated now!

Spot-checked PL OK!

That's what proof-listening is for, to catch any missed edits :D

Section 3 is up: https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/sixmonthsatthewhitehouse_03_carpenter_128kb.mp3

Time: 25:34

Note: there are two places where the author leaves a blank in chapter 16, specifically when Lincoln is identifying places people are from. Those blanks are not mistakes.
