The Sailor's Word-book, D - G, by William Henry Smyth (1788 - 1865)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-sailors-word-book-d-g-by-william-henry-smyth/

An encyclopaedia (a digest, the author calls it) of nautical terms and other words relevant to navigation, the character of seafarers, fish and mathematics, weaponry and sailcraft. This book is full of surprising meanings for words in a marine context. It is practically useful to mariners; and for the etymologist it's a box of chocolates, some delightfully intuitively confected. The original was published as one book, here divided into volumes. This is the second volume. (Summary by Czandra)
Source text (please read only from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/26000

Target completion date:

Prooflistening level: Word Perfect
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I asked my librarian about the noise, and she said, "no one would come here
if they weren't allowed to talk out loud." So I read out loud.

Hi. This project has been claimed by Berndt (lorda) with Christine Brown-Rottger as DPL. Thanks for your interest! The first volume (A to C) will be available for listening by the end of the month.

I've made some corrections in the intro and outro, so the two projekts will be constant there.

Section 1:
Proposed edit
At around 0:24 You say "D to Deck". This section only goes through DECK-PUMPS. There are 6 more "Deck -___" terms in Section 2 so I am suggesting that you say "D thru Deck-Pumps" instead. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Christine. I probably should have included all the decks in this one. I'll look at that. there seemed something comfortable about including the whole word "deck" in the index!

Welcome to our new craft!

section 1 reloaded at 25: 33. Only the last 4 minutes have been changed to include all the decks.
