The Lost Oases, by Ahmed Hassanein (1889 - 1946)

This project is now complete. All files can be downloaded from the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/the-lost-oases-by-ahmed-hassanein/

This book was published in 1925. Oxford-educated Egyptian diplomat and geographic explorer, Hassanein Bey (Ahmad Muhammad Hassanayn), with two companions and a few cranky camels, trekked south across the vast sandy Libyan desert, from the Mediterranean to the Sudan, in the process rediscovering and confirming the locations of two “lost” oases known previously only through “vague tradition.”

More than just a record of scientific and geographic discovery, the book evinces a deep respect and reverence for the beauty and cruelty of the desert. In the author’s own words, “In the silent infinity of the desert, body, mind, and soul are cleansed. Man feels nearer to God, feels the presence of a mighty Power from which nothing any longer diverts his attention. Little by little an inevitable fatalism and an unshakable belief in the wisdom of God’s decree bring resignation even to the extent of offering his life to the desert without grudge. There are times when he feels that it really does not matter…”

This is a modestly written record of an epic adventure, one which could not have succeeded without the support of King Fouad I of Egypt and the tolerant friendship of Sayed Idris El Senussi, head of the mysterious Senussi Brotherhood in Kufra that generally did not welcome western explorers. If you're up for a difficult trek across a vast waterless waste; if you're ready to walk the whole day on blistered feet, because even walking is less painful than riding on a camel; if your throat is parched, and there is no well in sight...well, then, this is the book for you! It's a marvelous adventure tale told by the first person to cross the Libyan desert from the Mediterranean to the Sudan. Grab your burnoose and let's go discover some "lost" oases.

You had me at "cranky camels". I'll MC this for you.

Edit: We're all set up! And I say "we" because I couldn't resist and added myself as a DPL...

Let's go and ride some camels!

Hi, Ava! Welcome aboard! :D

Might as well load up those camels...

Section 01: Chapter 1, The Desert
https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/lostoases_01_hassanein_128kb.mp3 (12:53)

Section 02: Chapter 2, The Planning of the Journey; Chapter 3, The Blessing of the Baggage
https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/lostoases_02_hassanein_128kb.mp3 (9:06)

Section 03: Chapter 4, Supplies and Equipment
https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/lostoases_03_hassanein_128kb.mp3 (17:40)

Notes:
1. There is a discrepancy between the table of contents and the chapter numbers noted in the text. I've chosen to follow the text.
2. Chapters 2 and 3 are very short, so I've combined them into one section; the rest of the chapters are reasonable length and can stand alone.

I got started already after all. ;-)

Chapter 1 is perfectly read and promises a great adventure. I'm looking forward to it!

I've marked it PL OK, but I want you to know that I'm hearing some background noise here and there. It's not constant, and to me it sounds like... as if somebody shifts a piece of paper around on a table. It's hard to describe, but it's one of those sounds I find really irritating...

If you have any idea what this may be, and if you could eliminate the source in future sections, that would be great! No need to touch the sections you already have in, it's just a personal thing and my hearing is not the best anymore, after all... :D

Good feedback, thanks. If I can clean it up, I want to. But I'm not sure what you mean. I listened again to both the Audacity trace and the mp3 file on high-quality headphones and found a few low-level "clicks," but nothing obvious otherwise. Nothing that suggests "shifting paper" to me, anyway. :?:

Can you tell me the time stamp of one or two of these noises, so I can be sure I'm listening to what you're hearing? Thanks.

And thanks for critically reviewing. It makes the final product better.

Steve

PS - my hearing isn't what it used to be, either.

The Libyan desert must have been a lawless place before the coming of the Senussi Brotherhood!

I've just listened to section 2 - PL OK!

As for that shuffling noise, I can hear it at
00:15
00:20
00:38
00:56
1:27 - that's the most pronounced; I stopped writing down further ones.

I do not listen with a headset, just with my wheezy computer's speakers - that may be an issue here as well. However, as I said, I do find this particular noise quite irritating...

I listened carefully, both to the original Audacity project file and the mp3 file, with the gain cranked up so baseline noises are more apparent. I think the "shuffling" sound you hear may be my breath intake. If so, you have a good ear. Listen to these two examples (which you flagged) and tell me what you think:

From 1:26.869 to 1:27.968. I hear the word "steps" followed by breath intake.
From 55:894 to 56:678. I hear the word "way" followed by breath intake.

Are these sounds what you're talking about? I can't find anything else to account for it. If so, I'm reluctant to suppress them entirely, as low level breath noises makes a spoken recording sound more "alive," or so I've been told.

Cheers, Steve
