I had always thought that lyric from "Black Mountain Blues" - "...babies cry for liquor" was an exaggeration. "Tain't so", per the author! I love reading history, so please allow me to go on to 7 - 'A Leaf from the Past"
Thank you,
Brize

Section 7, A Leaf From the Past, enclosed, in 29:08:

https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/oursouthernhighlanders_07_kephart_128kb.mp3

Quite a few unattributed quoted passages that I wasn't sure how to read, but of course I love doing dialogue so generally treated as such, even if he was quoting written work. (They have to know where it stops ans starts, right?)
I'm going to head west for a bit now, let others pick up some of this fascinating material, but I'll 'hurry back now, y'hear' as soon as I can. (First time i heard that expression, after getting gas near Asheville I think, I sort of did a double take...huh?)

Thank you,
Brize

As promised, I 'hurried back' to this title (can't believe more of it hasn't been snapped up already). I think I'll skip over section 8 (sounds like more moonshiner number crunching) and sign up for 9, please.

Thank you,
Brize

Section 9, The Outlander and the Native enclosed in 28:50:

https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/oursouthernhighlanders_09_kephart_128kb.mp3

The last couple of paragraphs have a "warning...what you are about to view may be disturbing..." quality about them, but I'm this far in, may as well keep going - sign me up for 10 please.

Thank you,
Brize

Hi Brize,
The Land of Do Without- that sounds like parts of Maine, too.
I will sign you up for it.
Thank you and Thanks for Section 10!

Section 11, Land of Do Without, enclosed in 31:11:

https://librivox.org/uploads/alg1001/oursouthernhighlanders_11_kephart_128kb.mp3

This book has developed in me a genuine affection for these folk! That may be partially because, had my own earliest New World ancestor not disembarked at Halifax, he may have continued on with many of his countrymen into the Appalachians and it would be ME going coat-less in winter and living in a drafty cabin (or more likely, being made fun of for "fussin around like an old granny woman" to chink it cozy tight.). This chapter sorta reminds me of the old Hank Williams song "Everything's Okay"

I think I'll sign up for two sections, 12 and 13, this time, please. I've been looking forward to that 'mountain dialect' section and better put in my claim. (Still can't believe more readers aren't flocking to this title - to read of rugged mountaineers!)

Thank you,
Brize
