Gertrude Bell traveled extensively in the Middle East in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, studying the archaeology and anthropology of the region. She became an expert and was instrumental in formulating British policy in the region following the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the outbreak of World War I. (Summary by LynneT)
