Gun Running for Casement, by Karl Spindler (1887 - 1951), translated by William Montgomery (1871 - 1930) and E. H. McGrath

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/gun-running-for-casement-by-karl-spindler/

Sir Roger David Casement was a British public servant renowned for his Congo Report (1904) and his Putumayo Report (1912) both of which exposed atrocities committed by white traders in the exploitation of indigenous labor. In 1912 he retired from public service to his native country, Ireland. An Ulster Protestant by birth, Casement sympathized with the predominantly Catholic Irish Nationalists. During World War I, he enlisted German military aid in support of their cause. Roger Casement was arrested, tried and executed for treason in 1916.

Gun Running for Casement (in the Easter Rebellion, 1916) is the true story of a German special military operation meant to smuggle captured Russian armaments into Ireland so that they might be used during the Easter Rising. The book was written by Karl Spindler, the German naval officer who led the mission. (Summary by Brian Fullen)

Sorry. I did a bare bones, required field only approach with PTG. Not sure what the issue had been but I decided to scale down and left some things out in order to get a template generated.

I don't know if the link to author was the issue but here it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Spindler_(naval_officer)

I'm sure the issue was not genre but I forgot to put it in when I scaled back. I think the best fit is probably Non-fiction -> War.

For keywords I probably would have used something like: "Easter Rising", "Arms Smuggling", "Treason", "Special Operations", "World War I" and "German Navy". I don't remember what I had actually tried in my attempt with PTG and I don't know how rigorous it is with tags..

I could not find a wikipedia article for one of the translators, E. H. McGrath.

Some sources do indicate that the other translator, W. Montgomery, is one and the same William Montgomery who wrote much about Augustine of Hippo and who translated other works from German such as e.g. "The Quest of the Historical Jesus". Also, the title page of "Gun Running for Casement" indicates a military background (I think) for both translators and I do believe that William Montgomery did some cryptographic work for the military during the WWI era.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to pick this up as MC. I've read much of it (deeper than skim) and in one opinion (mine) it reads well.

This sounds really interesting! I'd love to DPL if no one else has already claimed it.

My guess would be the parentheses in the Wikipedia link.

Seems like a perfect guess. I suppose wikipedia's use of parens for disambiguation is a problem for PTG.

I think that would be great! All you and I need now is an MC and then maybe some narrators, too :D

No one else has claimed DPL but even if they had, I'd rather it be you so your are "it" (and have my appreciation) :D

When I happened across this book and then got an inkling of the backstory I was afraid the writing might be "stuffy" somehow. But it is not that at all. In my opinion this naval officer is a natural storyteller though I suppose some of that credit also goes to the translators.

I'm going to hope we get an MC and I'll start working up the details for the MW. Cheers!

My guess is maybe the badlands of Dakota!

Edit: I had to look it up (again) because I am old and forgetful, I suppose (I just can't remember if I'm forgetful or not)! He went down with the ship! If Bismarck was a ship that sailed in North Dakota!

At this moment you are my favorite human. My wife is always my favorite being but then she's an angel, so, not a human.

Thanks again Ann and Elsie! Unless I have botched the MW (fingers crossed) we are ready to find some readers (more fingers crossed).

I'd like to claim 4 & 5.
What should we do with the footnotes?
