Joseph in the Snow, and The Clockmaker. In Three Volumes. Vol. III., by Berthold Auerbach (1812 - 1882), translated by Grace Jane Wallace (1804 - 1878)
Surely you've heard it said that you don't just marry the individual, you marry their whole family. Though perhaps at first kindhearted Lenz could only see good in Annele's family, he will soon discover to his distress that misplaced trust can be ruinous. Then too, Lenz can be moody and distant and he is too much a dreamer and too soft a touch to be a good businessman. Just ask Annele!

Well, we all have our faults and every marriage has its ups and downs. The marriage of Lenz and Annele will last only if they find a way forward together. Indeed, if they do not unite in the face of the perils that are in store for them, and unless there is the support of those who love them, they may not survive at all!

Hello,

Section 2 of the Clockmaker!

This chapter might have been better titled: “Anelle Needs An Attitude Adjustment” or “Run Lenz, RUN!” :D

 But, but she's so pretty, darn it! :? And, it's not exactly like "the Bachelor" there in that village. I mean the bailiff's daughter, or the doctor's daughters. So, it's not a match made in heaven :9: but give Anelle a chance and maybe she'll grow on you  Seriously, thanks for the upload! 8-) .

Alright, alright Brian, I’ll reserve judgment on Anelle for now! :D But it’s clear her charms thoroughly paralyze and confuse poor Lenz. He’s got my pity… for now! (It’s like a 19th Century version of “The Young and the Restless!”)

Shall I read one more chapter (section 3) then pass the baton to the next patient reader who can likely make better sense of this slightly awkward translation? :D

Cool! So you’re giving me permission to re-write the brat’s whole character? Go off script? Ad lib? Ohhh wait—I get it...you were KIDDING! (And obviously so am I).

Okay, here I go!
