The History of Rome, volume 4, by Titus Livius (55 BC - 17 AD), translated by William Masfen Roberts ( - 1927)
The History of Rome (Ab Urbe Condita) is a history of ancient Rome, written in Latin by Livy (Titus Livius) between 27 and 9 BC, covering the period from the supposed arrival of Aeneas and the Trojansall the way to the time of Augustus, finishing with the death of Drusus, contemporary to Livy himself. Only 35 of the 142 books written by the author arrived to our times. This translation, by the Rev Canon William Masfen Roberts, was published in six volumes as part of the Everyman's Library Collection. (Summary by Leni)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Please observe that this book uses the common abbreviations for Latin first names. Here is a list of the names and their abbreviations. Please read the name, not the abbreviation: that is, please read "P.Valerius" as "Publius Valerius".

For the first section, say:
"Section # of The History of Rome, volume 4. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit librivox.org." [Optional: "Read by your name."] "The history of Rome, volume 4, by Livy, translated by William Masfen Roberts. Number of Book, number of chapters covered in the book. Chapter [number]."
Intro to recording:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.

For the second and subsequent sections, you may use the shortened intro if you wish:
"Section # of The History of Rome, volume 4, by Livy, translated by William Masfen Roberts. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain." [Optional: "Read by your name."] "Number of Book. Chapter [number]"
End of recording:
Say:
"End of section #." [Optional, and if not stated in the intro: "Read by your name, city, date."]
If you are recording the final section of the book, add:
"End of The History of Rome, volume 4, by Livy, translated by William Masfen Roberts."
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

It is interesting that in WWII, the Japanese were particularly disdainful of Brits and Americans who ended up in their POW camps after they’d surrendered. The Japanese felt there was no honor in this and that it would have been more honorable to commit suicide than to ever surrender. To commit seppuku was a great honor for both men and women (e.g. Madame Butterfly).
