Advice to Young Men and Boys, by Benjamin Comegys (1819 - 1900)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/advice-to-young-men-and-boys-by-benjamin-comegys/

Benjamin B Comegys was a member of the Philadelphia Board of Trusts, which oversees (among many) the trust for Girard College. Committed to their education and well-being, Comegys was one of many who addressed the schoolboys during chapel services. Here are a few of his speeches, selected by Comegys himself. Girard College continues in operation today; also, an elementary school in that city bears the name of our lecturer. (Summary by John R Moore)

Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

OK!

As you can see, though, it hasn't even been set up by an MC yet. I expect to begin recording this project next week.

I'll be recording the last section of my current solo project today, then back into your Pictures to finish out the year.

Thanks!

I'll get the MW updated later this morning (I'm in GMT-6, so CET-7?) Recording should start next week; as I have a few chapters in a couple of collaborative projects going also.

Hi John,

Thank you for selecting one of the ebooks I produced (with Distributed Proofreaders) for Project Gutenberg, just recently. I appreciate your interest, and hope you enjoy recording the project.

I've bookmarked this thread, and would be happy to hear if you encounter any errors or issues with the text, which will allow me to review and send corrections to PG.

Best,
Don (DACSoft)

How much trouble is it to change the summary? I think I've seen something about being able to update it before cataloging.

I wrote a longer summary while preparing to start the project, but cut it down when creating the template. I was working on the Introductory material today (Section 0), and I think I'd like to use the longer form because it addresses a concern some people may have on listening to this section.

The potential issue is that the school was envisioned (in 1831) for "poor orphan white boys." My draft summary states this, but notes that admission is no longer restricted by race or sex. (In fact, most of the photos on the school's website show black female students.) Of course, there's no way to address this in the readings themselves.

Hi John,

changing the summary is only copy and paste for the MC. You can change it and poste a note here does I know it. Then I will change it in the database.

I thought it might be as simple as that, but wasn't sure. I've seen a couple of long summaries, but I had thought to keep it shorter -- then decided it was too short. Here it is:

Born in France, Stephen Girard became a "Mariner and Merchant" in his adopted city of Philadelphia. One of the richest men in America when he died in 1831, he permanently endowed a school for the education and training of "poor white orphan boys." Benjamin B Comegys was a businessman and a member of the Board of City Trusts which oversees the school; he often addressed the boys during Sunday chapel services. Here are presented a few of his speeches, selected by Comegys himself. Girard College continues in operation today, where admission is no longer limited by race or sex. Reflecting Comegys' keen interest in the education of young people, an elementary school in that city bears the name of our speaker.

Sections 0, 13, and 14 are uploaded, ready for PL.

https://librivox.org/uploads/lorda/advicetoyoungmenandboys_00_comegys_128kb.mp3 [26:16]

https://librivox.org/uploads/lorda/advicetoyoungmenandboys_13_comegys_128kb.mp3 [13:09]

https://librivox.org/uploads/lorda/advicetoyoungmenandboys_14_comegys_128kb.mp3 [08:24]

I hope to manage 2 sections per week going forward, which will finish it up around the target of Feb 28. Of course, even though one has acquired a target, one doesn't always hit it  but still we aim!

BTW, InTheDesert, I think I'll proceed with the sections in reverse order, from 12 down to 1. Because the speeches are independent of one another, there's no plot or other sequence that needs be followed when PL. As a software developer for 33+ years, I've got some idiosyncratic ways of working through projects. :)
