It's been almost a month. I got busy with many other things including some other LibriVox reads. Now I can get back to it.

It's amazing what connections the planets have in English. Yesterday I found out that lead poisoning was called saturnism. Saturn in alchemy was the name for lead.

Section 1 ready for PL

https://librivox.org/uploads/philchenevert/christianastrology_001_lilly_128kb.mp3

length 8:53

For anyone interested the Latin passage basically says: I pray for the first fruits of your character to grow under your sun. Rather than the unworthy fruits of revenge.

Interesting passage, especially if Lilly is using sun in an astrological sense.

I have done some experimental effects this time that have made this section loud. Been awhile. Now I am back into it.

My only comment for section 1 is that the intro (0:00 - 0:26) is quieter than the rest of the section, if you'd like to check and adjust. But even so, I can mark it PL OK, and you can decide if you'd like to adjust and re-upload or not.

I feel that I should explain my relative absence.

I've wanted for years to do a course on professional audio engineering. Sadly most courses are terrible including paid ones by high profile educational providers. Imagine my delight at the start of April to find a dream course. One taught by a veteran audio engineer with marked assignments. I could not say no to that; it was too good an opportunity.

Upon enrolment I completed the first assignment: to do some voice over. I will show you the passage that I did :

It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet. It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.

Text adapted from Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. [clearly it being in the public domain I am safe to put it here.]

Naturally I was nervous about this. I made sure to give it my best reading effort: that was indeed a marking criterion. I found the "word pair" of eye and open and emphasised both. All you AI programmers out there: will you ever get AI to do what I call a word pair technique? You can't do it by grammatical parts of speech. You have to possess the human knowledge that those words will create a visual image. If AI wants to try that, well good luck with that.

I was nervous about my set up. I changed it a bit to reduce the room reverberation. I made sure to record at a quiet time.

About a week later I got my assignment back. I passed with flying colours! The marker threw everything at my read to find something wrong with it. He threw all of his tools to find any plosive popping or echo or about 10 other things. He gave the mark that is the highest: that if it were a real world job that what I did was easily good enough to be a paid read.

Now I have an example of how I should do it. I know that in this book I have tried a variety of approaches. That frustrated me; I was aiming after Yorkshire Battles to be more consistent across chapters. In short what works for me is:

- dynamic microphone. [some people tell you to never use a dynamic mic for voice over] . But it works for me so I am staying with one.
- No effects at all. I wasn't allowed to use any effects for this assignment. [OK I might chuck in a monitoring limiter to check any peaking]
- Throwing a blanket over the wall in front; I can do this because I have put some boxes there to rest a blanket against.

My strength isn't being bass-centric or loud. I am good at having a clear read.

I feel ready to do better reads for Christian Astrology. I will have to balance LibriVox with a challenging course. At the end of the course I will be an audio engineer. :D No excuses anymore for anything wrong with my narration. I'm training to be an audio engineer; I should deal with it.

Glad you are progressing with this. Sound particles? gee, I sure don't have any of those .... I think. Anyway, may all your particles be auspicious in a good way. :D :D

[chapter 4 ]

Despite going slowly I am happy with how this is going; I have changed my set up to use my headphones a lot more. I've also learnt better editing techniques in Reaper.

A couple of PL notes for section 10:

at 4:25 text is "so underneath those characters", I think I hear understand.

15:30, text is "as neer the Cusp as I can", I can't hear the second "as" very clearly
