A Rip van Winkle of the Kalahari: Seven Tales of South-West Africa, by Frederick Carruthers Cornell (1867 - 1921)
First published in 1915, these seven stories exemplify the beautiful, but arid and treacherous area that forms part of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa and Namibia (then South-West Africa). Most of these stories were written on the veldt; at odd times, in out- of-the-way prospecting camps, or in the wilds of the Kalahari Desert. They bring us reminiscences of a long-forgotten era and of a variety of fascinating characters and dangerous animals that roamed this area. (Summary by Google books)
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/21899
Target completion date: 2023-03-31

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I had a look at the text, and lots of the Chapters will need to be split. So there will be 33 sections, I have added relevant info to the MW

Nothing to add Phil I've incorporated into the magic window. 33 sections. Thanks. Hopefully I've done everything correctly and you can move to Solo. I'm ready with the Preface, Introduction and Chapter 1

Fortune cookie. I took the liberty of changing the text link on the first post to the one we usually use for Gutenberg. If there is a reason why you wished to use the other link, please let me know.

Hi Phil

No problem at all that's fine. Apologies if I used an incorrect link. If all is in order you can go ahead and move to solo thanks. I'm on standby with preface, introduction and chapter 1. Would be interested to know what you gents think of the story. Larry, I thought it would be a change for you to listen to re my projects which have largely been children's books and Villette of course which was quite a heavy novel. In hindsight i was crazy to tackle 74 sections as a solo on only my 2nd Librivox project.

Take care
Leanne

Many thanks

Section 02 - The Blue Diamond will follow soonest. Going to do the next chapter of The Corner House Girls first.

Many thanks,

Hi Larry,

Sorry, I wanted to mention a few items re the text. In the Introductory, 2nd paragraph, the tribe name should be Ovambos, with a "b", and I have read it as such (not Ovampos with a "p). We actually did a 4 day canoe trip on the Orange River some years ago, and our Guide was from Ovambo, so that is how I know. The wounded eland referred to is a buck (also referred to as "game"). And there was a typo also in the second paragraph, should be Etosha Pan not Etosha Pau (again, only someone from Africa would know).

Thanks
Leanne

Thanks for your notes.
Thinking this might be a Gutenburg error, I compared this to the Archive scan, and that is the way these were printed, so I'm not going to send corrections to PG. It could be a typo, or more likely a mistake on the part of the author. Nonetheless, you are perfectly welcome to record these with your corrections! Nothing is more reliable than first-hand knowledge and experience! :D

Glad to mark both PL OK!
