The Forest Reverie, by Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-forest-reverie-by-edgar-allan-poe/
LibriVox volunteers bring you -- recordings of The Forest Reverie by Edgar Allan Poe.
This was the Weekly Poetry project for January 2, 2022.
-----
Whilst Edgar Poe was editor of the Broadway Journal, some poems were published over the signature of "A. M. Ide". In order, doubtless, to give a show of variety, Poe was then publishing some of his known works in his journal over noms de plume, and as no other writings whatever can be traced to any person bearing the name of "A. M. Ide," it is not impossible that the poems now republished in this collection may be by the author of "The Raven." Having been published without his usual elaborate revision, Poe may have wished to hide his hasty work under an assumed name. (Summary by John H Ingram from the Gutenberg text)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
The Forest Reverie by Edgar Allan Poe, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
'Tis said that when
The hands of men
Tamed this primeval wood,
And hoary trees with groans of woe,
Like warriors by an unknown foe,
Were in their strength subdued,
The virgin Earth
Gave instant birth
To springs that ne'er did flow—
That in the sun
Did rivulets run,
And all around rare flowers did blow—
The wild rose pale
Perfumed the gale,
And the queenly lily adown the dale
(Whom the sun and the dew
And the winds did woo),
With the gourd and the grape luxuriant grew.

So when in tears
The love of years
Is wasted like the snow,
And the fine fibrils of its life
By the rude wrong of instant strife
Are broken at a blow—
Within the heart
Do springs upstart
Of which it doth now know,
And strange, sweet dreams,
Like silent streams
That from new fountains overflow,
With the earlier tide
Of rivers glide
Deep in the heart whose hope has died—
Quenching the fires its ashes hide,—
Its ashes, whence will spring and grow
Sweet flowers, ere long,—
The rare and radiant flowers of song!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Good afternoon, Tricia!

Here I am again in my English recording practice. I've made a prose one, but practice makes perfect!

In the feedback you can give any advice you want. My goal is to be better each day! :D

Thanks in advance!

P.S.: This is my 50th post here!

Sounds good! My two pieces of pronunciation advice:

0:16 - "groans of woe" - "woe" is pronounced to rhyme with "foe" (long O. I hear "woo")

0:26 - "springs that ne'er did flow" - "ne'er" is pronounced to rhyme with "hair" (I hear it here with a long E, to rhyme with "near")

It's up to you if you want to edit it. I think it's fine the way it is. :)

Technically, two issues to fix:

- The sample rate is 48,000 Hz; needs to be 44,100.

- The volume's too low; it needs to come up about 5 dB.
