Fiander's Widow by M. E. Francis (1859 - 1930)
A rural romance, as described by the author, set in Dorset. A 58 year old farmer meets the beautiful young grand-daughter of a recently deceased friend and they marry but she is soon widowed herself. (Summary by Belinda Loveday)

Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Bee,

I'll MC for you. MW will be along shortly.

Meanwhile, since this will be your first solo, here is some information to get you started.

Since this will be your first project as soloist/book coordinator(BC), you will need to set up a password for access to the workflow system so you can enter the information into the section compiler which then appears in the Β "Magic Window" in the top post. Β Here are some links to detailed instructions for logging into the system and setting a password the first time, as well as for entering and editing information in the section compiler.Β

First Time Logging in to the Workflow

Instructions for BCs and DPLs

A version of the above is also in the LibriVox wiki in case you can't access Google Docs for some reason.

BCs - How to Update the Magic Window

If you have any questions, let me know. Β I'll leave this thread here in the Launch Pad for a day or so longer before I move it to the Going Solo forum, to see if a DPL (Dedicated Prooflistener) volunteers. Β Looking forward to working with you.

hi :)

this book looks entertaining, so if you don't have anyone lined up yet as DPL, I can volunteer. Curious whether I will encounter Miss Pinsent again in this book

Yes please Sonia!

Good old Miss P! But I think the accents will be more like my own very broad Gloucestershire which is what drew me to it in the first place. A bit pirate-y ooooh arrrrrr !

now that sounds interesting !!! Looking forward to hearing that. (I hope I will understand anything at all  )

Which reminds me...maybe there is one of the haunted homes from my new group project in your area, it would be fun to hear it in an authentic accent, if you want to take a break from your solo one day ;)

I did notice a Chedworth one in there, which is not far from me and happens to also be where some of my ancestors are from - I'll go and check out if there any others. That Chedworth one was quite a short passage if I recall. I'll go and have a look now!

Too late! It's been assigned - fair enough - My fault, I wasn't quick enough off the mark. I don't think there are any others local to me. Shame.

Here is Section 1:
https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/fianderswidow_01_francis_128kb.mp3 Track time: 27:25

I'm going to read the BC notes again to make sure I haven't missed something I need to do but equallly don't want to step on anyone's toes!! I added the Section titles to the MW a few days ago - There is the Prologue which is Section 1, then 11 chapters in each of the two Parts. Please let me know if I haven't filled that in correctly on the MW.
Thanks!

it looks good

what you also have to do as BC is copy the link into the MW, add the time into the notes sections and set the Status to "Ready for PL".

I will try to PL today still !

I listened to section 1 and it's wonderfully narrated, very lively and wow the local dialect is something  good I had the text to look over with  But yes, I understood it, so all is well. :)

40 years his junior, the old goat... I wonder when the young farm-help will show up

Textually all is perfect, I only have one small stylistic note for your consideration:

> from 14:30 to 14:32: between "I think you look kind" and "late on that same evening" – nearly 3 seconds of silence feel really too long for a listener, who might think the story is over by then. I always suggest not exceeding 2 seconds, even between paragraphs, usually 1.5 is fully enough to make a break.

Concerning the next section, I would suggest putting the subtitle "The sleeping beauty" also in the MW, only in the very first chapter of that Part, not in each section. Then for Part 3, the same, first chapter could have the subtitle of that part. Since the author chose a title, I think it's fair to use it :)

Thanks, a great start so far, looking forward how it will continue.

Great thank you, I've shaved some seconds off that part between 'kind' and 'late' - i'll bear that in mind in future! I've reloaded the link for you to listen.
I've also added the subtitles to the beginning of the two parts. Let me know if it's not in the right place!
Section 2 is also ready - some lovely eccentric villagers introduced! :D
