Leni wrote: November 2nd, 2021, 5:59 am Thanks for checking. It is correct as it is - in truth, the wars with the Sabines (and the Veii.... and the Aequi...) span for many many chapters throughout these books. It would be impossible to actually keep them in one section each. As of course each book is too long to have it in one section and each chapter too short, I divided them in somewhat equal chunks, trying to respect some form of unity, but it will not be exactly self contained, since that is not how the book written.
I'm sorry, I don't understand. Chapter 18 starts on p. 88, not p. 86. The MW is incorrect about where chapter 18 starts. Do you want me to follow the chapters or the page numbers?

I am so sorry for the confusion. Yes, start on page 86, please - it should be 16.

here is section 10 as it stands

https://librivox.org/uploads/leni/historyofrome1_10_livy_128kb.mp3

It is 18 min, 0 seconds

I say "as it stands" because I'm very open to hearing improvements on the pronunciations. They were harder than I expected and I want to make sure I am getting them right. Please don't be timid in pointing out instances where I need to change something. I can't promise I'll sound comfortable saying them but I at least want accuracy. =)

Hi there.

Have a look at the LibriVox wiki: there is a lot of excellent help available there. In particular, you may want to have a peek at https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=English_Pronunciation_Guides. We all come across words that we need help with. There are a number of web sites with pronunciations and some are better than others. I avoid any pronunciations that sound computer generated. You can try just googling the word or name and adding "pronounce" e.g.: "Pronounce Romulus"

I will be away from the studio from April 21st through April 28th.

Oh yes, I referenced a number of these type of things when recording. Interesting in hearing what specifically I missed! =)

Hello, Mathias, and welcome to Librivox.

As this would be your first recording, please do the 1-minute test (https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test) before starting the section. This is not an audition, but it helps us make sure you can produce files with the correct technical specifications. Also, I recommend you always read carefully the first post of every project, since it has all the important information for that project. In the meantime, I am assigning you the section.

Hello,

Nice job on section 10. Well read and no technical issues noted.

You specifically inquired regarding feedback on pronunciations and let me start by saying that I am by no means a Latin scholar. Many Latin names have acceptable alternative pronunciations and the use of any of them is fine. It is a case of "toe-mate-toe", "to-maat-to". For example Sabines has two distinct pronunciations as does Aristodemus. What should be considered is consistency, that is only using one pronunciation in any recording. That said, in your recording at 3:00 you pronounce Auruncans as OR-in-kans, while at 4:15 and 5:10 you used ah-RUNE-kuns. Also, at 4:25 and 5:00 you use a two syllable pronunciation of "vinea". However I find two pronunciations, both of three syllables: "vin-ee-ay" and "vin-ee-eye".

These are rather academic issues to be argued about by the scholars, and are at best optional edits.

I have marked section 10 PL Okay

Hi Chris,

Very nice job on section five. I enjoyed listening and look forward to other sections. :D

There were no problems with your reading and just a couple small technical issues.
  • You listed your upload size as 20:52 but the file was 21:05. I know, it is a very small difference but the reason for indicating the file size is to ensure that the correct file is uploaded and nothing gets lost in the upload process.
  • There should be a 5-second silence at the end of the file. This was missing although you did have the correct leading silence of 0.5 to 1.0 seconds at the beginning.
  • At the end, you should record "End of section ...." I heard "The end of section ...."
Please could you carry out the edits then upload the file using the same file name and post in this thread. If you need any more help please just ask. Thanks
