Apologies for the delay - I think standard proof listening will be fine. Are these any better?

Yes, Hindbridge, these are better. No apologies needed. :)
Technically they are acceptable, though the background noise is pushing the threshold.
Also if you open the files in Audacity you would see red strikes, they show "clipping", sounds too loud for your mic. They create cracks in the track.
You could use the Audacity Compressor effect to soften them, if you wish, and in future you could keep you mic farther away or use a less sensitive setup.
That said, sec.2 is acceptable as is by the "standard" PL level.
Sec.3 @ 4:25 the "stores are closed, their shutters on" phrase is repeated.

Yes, 2story, it should work! Please re-upload the file, and post the new link and length here :)
Hi Chulsky

Uploaded the amplifed and renamed file: https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/bolshevikmyth_38_berkman_128kb.mp3

I forgot to mention before I had normalized the file I uploaded previously. Thought I'd mention that FYI. This is all new to me, my first stab, so thanks for bearing with me.

Let me know what changes/edits may be needed.

elibishop wrote: February 20th, 2022, 7:29 pm I'm definitely going to have to look at Berkman's Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist after this. Right now it's hard for me to imagine how the author of this book, who's so determined to listen to all these different points of view and figure out if there's a way to move forward, could be the same guy who earlier in life had decided to jump into the middle of a strike he had no part in and try to use it to start a revolution by shooting Henry Clay Frick (a plan that was supposed to end in him also killing himself and leaving Emma Goldman to make a statement for him, which also makes it hard for me to imagine how he and Goldman stayed so close after that). Clearly he went through some things in between.
There is a great lecture on Berkman and Goldman on YouTube, by Karen Avrich who wrote the book "Sasha and Emma" in 2013. Interestingly, they were expelled from the US because they protested against the US introducing a military draft in WW1. Berkman was a complex man; he was warm to kids and animals. He wasn't a monster.

Hi elibishop, Definitely an interesting couple in an interesting time. Going to read the rest of the Bolshevik Myth for sure. Thanks for the info on the YouTube vid on them lightcrystal

Thank you, 2story! You did a good job, but still there are a few (very few for a first stab :) ) things to fix or consider:

Technicalities:
1. If you open your track in Audacity, you would see red bands that mark "clippings," volume exceeding the threshold. They create unpleasant cracks for the listener. The Audacity Compressor effect should help now, for the future see https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Setting_Recording_Input_Level
2. I hear paper rustling in the background. It is not ideal, but acceptable. However if you are reading from a printed book, please make sure it is the same edition:
"Source text (please read only from this text!): https://archive.org/details/al_Alexander_Berkman_The_Bolshevik_Myth_Diary_1920-22_a4/mode/2up"

Content:
0:00 "Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning." (from the head post). There are 2.5 sec.
0:25 "Chapter 38, Kronstadt" -- repetition, you have said that already.
23:25 "Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end." (from the head post). There are 1.2 sec.

Hi Chulsky,
Thanks for the review and kind comments. I'll get at those suggested edits ASAP. BTW, you did hear paper rustling, sorry about that. Just to confirm, I was reading from the Librivox text which I'd printed off.

Hi Mark - I noticed that it's been 3 months since chapter 1 was claimed. If it does expire without having heard from the reader, I'd like to call dibs on that one (if there's such a thing as dibs). Besides making a symmetrical pair with the final chapter that I did, it's also pretty interesting in itself.

Thank you, Eli,
I PM'd the one who claimed. If he does not respond in a couple of days, it would be yours!

Hi 2Story, thank you! Getting better! Still:
0:00: The initial silence is 1.5 sec. I would have given it a pass, but there is another note below. Please cut it in half while you are at it.
23:25: The 5 seconds of silence at the end should be the ambient silence, however the noise there is jarring...

Looking forward to the next iteration :!:
